Speculation

This article or section includes speculation, observations or opinions possibly supported by lore or by Blizzard officials. It should not be taken as representing official lore.

Aerie Peaks is not mentioned in World of Warcraft, although it does appear in the RPG where it seems to be implied that the city was named after the mountains that it's carved into. In Warcraft III, the Aerie Peaks is mentioned in the manual and Aerie Peak is shown in the in-game maps. It is also speculated that Metzen forgot and now uses the city as a reference. It was speculated by some that the land of Northeron mentioned in Warcraft II was renamed the Aerie Peaks or Hinterlands. However, Day of the Dragon references both Northeron and the Aerie Peaks, implying that they are separate locations (or at least Northeron is a subregion). Tides of Darkness confirms that the Hinterlands existed during the Second War. One might notice that the Aerie Peaks are described as being beyond the realm of Quel'Thalas. This is likely due to the fact that Northeron is shown to be in Quel'Thalas in some of the early concept maps, predating Warcraft III, and even one alleged to be an early WoW concept map.
