AlonsusCoT2

Alonsus Chapel in its former glory, as seen in Old Stratholme.

Alonsus Chapel is a chapel in the city of Stratholme, and where the first paladins of the Order of the Silver Hand were ordained prior to the Second War. It was named after Archbishop Alonsus Faol, the leader of the Church of the Holy Light during the Great Wars. The chapel actually serves as the base of operations of the Silver Hand in the burning city.

The chapel is located just inside Elders' Square from the Eastwall Gate service entrance, facing the open gate into the western districts.

History[]

Alonsus Chapel

Alonsus Chapel surrounded by the Scourge.

Prior to the Second War, the chapel was used by Archbishop Alonsus Faol for the induction ceremonies of Uther the Lightbringer, Turalyon, Tirion Fordring, Saidan Dathrohan, and Gavinrad the Direinto the newly created Order of the Silver Hand,[1] as the first paladins of the Church of the Holy Light and Azeroth.

At the time of the Third War, the chapel survived both Prince Arthas Menethil's purge of the city and the undead invasion during the Scourging of Lordaeron.

Before the Cataclysm, the chapel was completely surrounded by zombies and skeletons, while Magistrate Barthilas also stood vigil outside. Inside, the chapel's eternal flame ensured the protection of the building from the Scourge and the flames of Stratholme, but also to prevent its single occupant — the paladin Aurius Rivendare — from being transformed into a death knight.[2]

Alonsus Chapel Legion

Alonsus Chapel under the control of the Knights of the Silver Hand.

In order to complete their final trial to obtain the rank of Master, Blood Knights of Silvermoon City had to enter into Stratholme and extinguish the eternal flame. When they entered, they had to face Aurius and the spirits of five knights of the Silver Hand - Aelmar the Vanquisher, Cathela the Seeker, Gregor the Justiciar, Vicar Hieronymus and Nemas the Arbiter. After the Blood Knights emerged victorious from the battle, and extinguished the eternal flame, the chapel began to burn.[3]

Following the Cataclysm, and the liberation of Stratholme from Balnazzar and his Risen, the Argent Crusade took control of the chapel, as Crusade Commander Eligor Dawnbringer mentioned that it was the only building that the Scourge couldn't touch, and that it would be their forward base of operations in that half of the city.[4]

During the Burning Legion's third invasion, though the city was still in control of the Scourge, the chapel was controlled by the Silver Hand and Lord Grayson Shadowbreaker who used it as a base of operations. While some paladins were present in the Elder Square to protect the building, the others escorted the Highlord of the Silver Hand through the burning city, in order to later perform the ritual of purification for the barding of the Inv paladinmount blue [Highlord's Golden Charger].[5]

Notes[]

  • Although the eternal flame is supposed to keep the Scourge out, the mobs of Stratholme have no trouble following you inside the chapel.
  • In Of Blood and Honor, Tirion Fordring's ordination was held in the Cathedral of Light. It was likely meant to refer to Alonsus Chapel, as the cathedral in Stormwind City was ruined / in control of the orcs at the beginning of the Second War.
    • In the RPG there is another important religious building within Stratholme called the Temple of Light, which fell with the rest of the city to the Scourge.[6].
