AltSelfCast History

This is a brief history of how AltSelfCast evolved. Feel free to skip this if you want to.

AltSelfCast started as an idea with Telo. "Why is it", he asked, "that I have to stop flailing ineffectually at my enemy with my weak NightElf hands when I need to cast my pitiful healing spells? Why can't WoW simply know when I want to heal myself?" Well, he might not have put it exactly like that, but something like it.

And lo and behold, a few hours later a method - intricate, but neat all the same - was found that allowed Telo to cast spells on himself.

"I see my brethren toil, sweat pouring from their brows" he mused, "and it distresses me mightily. I must help them - I shall bring my gift to all children of Elune, that they might enjoy the fruits of my labor." Telo creased his brow and thought great and mysterious thoughts. And yea, verily, it was so - Telo instructed the world in how to self cast.

And there was much rejoicing.

However, out on the cold Scandinavian tundra, beyond the faintest sparks of civilization, evil thoughts festered. "Why," asked Sarf while gnashing on the bones of a missionary, "should I - or anyone, as long as I am one of those that reap the benefits - have to recode parts of the holy UI? This feels like too much work! It's... it's... it's not right, that's what it's not!"

And Sarf ventured forth and created an AddOn, and much goodness was done. But Sarf was cunning, and realized that people would be slow and sluggish if he aided them too much, and required them to actually hold a key pressed to indicate that self-casting should be performed.

Now, our final player enters the battlefield, the mighty Mugendai, whom toiled ceaselessly for seconds on end and wrought great changes to the poor AddOn once known as AltSelfCast, and SmartSelfCast was added. Now everything was selfcast that should be selfcast, and seldom did bad stuff happen (except at Patch Day, and generally, people were freaking out anyhow, so it didn't matter).

Enter today... (where it is no longer included with Cosmos as of 10/24/06 ; D)

AltSelfCast Introduction

AltSelfCast is an AddOn which allows you to cast spells on yourself automatically.

If you activate it (and activate SmartSelfCast which is HIGHLY recommended) you will automatically cast beneficial spells on yourself (or on a friendly target).

You can also use Alt (or Control, or Shift, depending on your setting) to force a spell to cast on yourself (despite your current target).

Slash Commands

The only slash command is the main one that controls the AddOn. This is equal to all options in the "SelfCast" section in the Cosmos option menu.

Enable/disable AltSelfCast

/altselfcast or /as [enable] [on|off|toggle]

If invoked with no parameters, it will toggle the current state of AltSelfCast, which is also the same behaviour it does with -1 or toggle as parameters. If it gets sent 0 or off as parameters, it will disable the AltSelfCast. If it gets sent 1 or on as parameters, it will enable the AltSelfCast.

Requiring/not requiring Alt

/altselfcast or /asc alt [on|off|toggle]

If invoked with no parameters, it will toggle whether Alt is needed to force selfcasting. If it gets sent 0 or off as parameters, it will not require Alt to force selfcasting. If it gets sent 1 or on as parameters, it will require Alt to force selfcasting.

Requiring/not requiring Control

/altselfcast or /asc <ctrl|control> [on|off|toggle]

If invoked with no parameters, it will toggle whether Control is needed to force selfcasting. If it gets sent 0 or off as parameters, it will not require Control to force selfcasting. If it gets sent 1 or on as parameters, it will require Control to force selfcasting.

Requiring/not requiring Shift

/altselfcast or /asc shift [on|off|toggle]

If invoked with no parameters, it will toggle whether Shift is needed to force selfcasting. If it gets sent 0 or off as parameters, it will not require Shift to force selfcasting. If it gets sent 1 or on as parameters, it will require Shift to force selfcasting.

Using SmartSelfCast

/altselfcast or /asc smart [on|off|toggle]

SmartSelfCast will automatically try to selfcast certain (all known) beneficial spells on you UNLESS you have a friendly target, in which case that target will get the spell UNLESS you hold the specified keys while casting.

If invoked with no parameters, it will toggle whether SmartSelfCasting is used or not. If it gets sent 0 or off as parameters, it will not do SmartSelfCasting. If it gets sent 1 or on as parameters, it will do SmartSelfCasting.

No SmartSelfCasting Dispel Magic

/altselfcast or /asc nodispel [on|off|toggle]

Affects SmartSelfCasting Dispel Magic behavior.

If invoked with no parameters, it will toggle whether SmartSelfCasting Dispel Magic should be done or not. If it gets sent 0 or off as parameters, it will SmartSelfCast Dispel Magic. If it gets sent 1 or on as parameters, it will not SmartSelfCast Dispel Magic.

No SmartSelfCasting in groups

/altselfcast or /asc <smartnogroup|nogroup> [on|off|toggle]

Affects SmartSelfCasting behavior while in a group.

Unless SmartSelfCasting is enabled, this option will not do a thing.

If invoked with no parameters, it will toggle whether SmartSelfCasting in a group should be done or not. If it gets sent 0 or off as parameters, it will SmartSelfCast in a group (if SmartSelfCasting is enabled). If it gets sent 1 or on as parameters, it will not SmartSelfCast in a group (even if SmartSelfCast is enabled).

SelfCast Override

/altselfcast or /asc override [on|off|toggle]

This will self cast ALL spells (that can be self cast) until disabled.

If invoked with no parameters, it will toggle whether all spells should be self cast or not. If it gets sent 0 or off as parameters, it will allow normal spell- (and SelfCast-) casting to be done. If it gets sent 1 or on as parameters, it will SelfCast all spells that it can. Use with caution.

Keybindings

Dependencies

Currently, AltSelfCast is optionally dependent on Cosmos. It uses Cosmos for the option menus and some other goodies, but nothing truly central.

Standalone URL

This was originally made as a standalone AddOn, which was compatible with Cosmos, located here : http://www.fukt.bth.se/~k/wow/scripts/AltSelfCast/

Sadly, that version is no longer up to date. I recommend that you get the newest version from the Cosmos zip files.
