Timolain is believed to be the name of the mage in the employ of the Scarlet Crusade referred to by Bardu Sharpeye and Alexia Ironknife. He crafted many weapons for use against the creatures of the Scourge, and is believed to have forged [Ashbringer], Blade of the Scarlet Highlord. He was executed by the Crusade for unknown reasons.

[Timolain's Phylactery] was an quest item that erroneously dropped from Large Vile Slimes from The Weeping Cave until patch 1.7. Players did not have to be on a particular quest to obtain the drop, and it is unknown what quest was associated with it. The bug went unnoticed for a time because the slimes were in a remote location and few players killed them.

Because it was intended for a quest not yet implemented, many players assumed it was related to the [Ashbringer], which was, and still is, not yet implemented.

A phylactery is used by liches to store a part of their soul so they may eventually regenerate if their corporeal form is destroyed. It is therefore assumed Timolain is a lich. Most known liches were mages in their previous lives, and so it has been also assumed Timolain was a mage. Nothing else about Timolain is definitively known. In a lengthy discussion on the World of Warcraft forums, players arrived at the premature (yet popular) conclusion that he must be the mage referred to by Bardu Sharpeye and Alexia Ironknife, and therefore the crafter of Ashbringer.
