Red whelps are the youngest of red dragonkind. Scales resembling solid flame glisten on the small dragon’s form. Although not great in size, she nevertheless has wicked claws, and her fangs are visible as she turns her head. Though clearly a predatory creature, the glint of wisdom and kindness shines in her eyes. These hatchlings are highly intelligent; unless newborn, they know enough about humanoid creatures to be friendly even when first encountered. They are suspicious of orcs, and avoid them if possible, due to the Horde’s previous enslavement of the red flight. Those red whelps raised near Grim Batol are more aggressive due to the events that occurred there (and possibly for other reasons connected to the contents of the fortress).

Red whelps flee combat if alone or clearly overwhelmed. If they are with a group, older whelps attack in order to give the younger children a chance to retreat; red dragons invariably put their own health and wellbeing second to that of a friend or loved one, even at this young age.

Its date of creation unknown, but it is known that Atiesh was wielded by each Guardian of Tirisfal until the line ended with Medivh. This would set the age of Atiesh at thousands of years.

Following the death of Medivh, the staff was brought to Dalaran where it was held by highborne sorcerer Tarsis Kir-Moldir. The Kirin Tor strongly objected to any mortal possessing such a powerful artifact, but Tarsis ignored their warnings. The destruction of the staff came about following the destruction of Dalaran by Archimonde. Atiesh got splintered in 42 pieces which were scattered across all of Azeroth. Brann Bronzebeard held the Common, which he somehow lost to C'Thun. The Scourge captured the the fourty-one other pieces, twenty of which were initially held by Tarsis.

Brave adventurers who commit themselves to reconstructing Atiesh will not only find all the denizens of Ahn'Qiraj and Naxxramas in their way, but also the Burning Legion. Atiesh has been "befouled" by the taint of Sargeras himself. Whether this was inflicted by its destruction by the Burning Legion or has simply always been the case is not clear, but in order to properly wield the staff one must excorcise the Hand of Sargeras from the staff, who is also called Atiesh.

Later, Meryl Winterstorm sent Garona Halforcen on a mission to retrieve all the parts of the shattered staff. This strongly suggests that the events of the whole quest line to assemble the staff, which starts with Neutral, never happened in lore.

Atiesh, Greatstaff of the Guardian is a legendary caster staff which could be assembled via a quest prior to the release of Patch 3.0.2, when Naxxramas moved back to Northrend. The quest begins inside Naxxramas and involves obtaining several parts of the staff.

* The staff can be obtained by mages, warlocks, priests, and druids.

* The item stats vary slightly for each class.

* The cloth portion of the staff varies based on which version it is: Green for Druids, Red for Mages, White for Priests, and Blue for Warlocks.

* The staff provides the ability to open a portal to Medivh's tower of Karazhan; however, at the time of Atiesh's release into World of Warcraft, Karazhan had yet to be implemented. It was opened upon the release of Burning Crusade. The portal leads to the front door of Karazhan.

Assembling the staff
* Kel'Thuzad's underlings in Naxxramas each have a chance to drop a Legendary.

** Once all 40 Splinters have been found, they may be combined into the Legendary, which gives a quest to visit the dragon Anachronos. Players were then given a quest to obtain the staff head and base of Atiesh. They had to be at least neutral with the Brood of Nozdormu to be able to talk to Anachronos to complete the quest and hence be able to pick up the following quest to obtain the head and base.

* Kel'Thuzad drops the common.

* The Common drops from C'Thun in the Temple of Ahn'Qiraj.

* The final step was going to Stratholme to cleanse the staff, followed by slaying Atiesh, Hand of Sargeras. The summoning location was in the Festival Lane west of the Alonsus Chapel, in between the western ("Scarlet") and eastern (Scourge) districts of Stratholme.

Notes
* Atiesh means "flame" in Persian. Many people speculate that this has something to do with World of Warcraft Lead Producer Shane (aka Shahram) Dabiri, who has origins from Iran, since he has suggested many NPC names to be of Persian origins.

* In Karazhan, the ghost of Medivh's father, Nielas Aran, is an optional boss encounter. When he sees Atiesh equipped by a raid member, he shouts out "yell" believing that Medivh gave his staff to the wielder.

* It was the first legendary caster item added to the game.
