Average item level (sometimes called by acronym, AIL) is a numerical value introduced with 
Wrath of the Lich King and added to the Stats panel of the character window with the release of 
Cataclysm. It represents the average of the item levels of the highest equippable items for all equipment slots. Strangely it includes items not currently equipped, but also items in the character's backpack, bags, or bank.[1]

Minimum AIL
Wrath of the Lich King also introduced minimum average item level requirements for dungeons, primarily heroic mode dungeons. This restriction is primarily enforced in the Dungeon Finder tool. Later this was extended to the Raid Finder as well.

- Starting Normal level 85+ dungeons (5-man): 358
- Shado-Pan Monastery and Mogu'shan Palace level 87 - 90 dungeons (5-man): 393[2][3]
- Siege of Niuzao Temple and Gate of the Setting Sun level 90 dungeons (5-man): 435[4][5]
- Heroic level 85+ dungeons (5-man): 440[6]
- Normal Mogu'shan Vaults raid (10/25-man): 460[6][7]
- Normal Heart of Fear or Terrace of Endless Spring raids (10/25-man): 470[6][7]
