Average item level

Average item level (sometimes called by acronym, AIL) is a numerical value introduced with Wrath of the Lich King and added to the Stats panel of the character window with the release of
Cataclysm. It represents the average of the item levels of the highest equippable items for all equipment slots. Strangely it includes items not currently equipped, but also items in the character's backpack, bags, or bank.[1]

Minimum AIL
Edit
Wrath of the Lich King also introduced minimum average item level requirements for dungeons, primarily heroic mode dungeons. This restriction is primarily enforced in the Dungeon Finder tool.
Notes
Edit
- The AIL of only equipped items is also listed in Battle.net character info pages.[2]
