Overview
−
:This article is about the pre-Cataclysm zone "The Barrens". For the post-Cataclysm zones, see Northern Barrens or Southern Barrens.

  +
Historically, a tabard serves both as a sleeveless shirt or coat (often over armor), and as a means of displaying heraldry (as livery). For players, it can show membership in a guild or (for roleplay purposes) allegiance to a particular group, boast of deeds performed, or simply be decorative.

  +
The only tabard available to players upon the release of World of Warcraft was the guild tabard. The release of battlegrounds and the honor system saw a variety of new tabards introduced, identifying a player's rank or standing with a particular battleground faction. The Scourge Invasion also added a small number of tabards. In World of Warcraft: The Burning Crusade, each faction in Outland was given its own tabard, available at exalted status. World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King continues this trend, but has lower (or no) reputation requirements and instead utilizes faction tabards in a system known as championing for farming reputation.
−
The Barrens is a large zone in central Kalimdor controlled (mostly) by the Horde. It is a massive savannah, with a few oases in the north-central region around the Crossroads. Before the upheaval, several large kaldorei cities stood here. Now, those brave few willing to scrape out a life on the arid plains inevitably run afoul of centaur warbands or quilboar raiding parties. Despite its often uninviting terrain and hostile inhabitants, the Barrens receive a good deal of interest from Alliance and Horde alike, as well as races native to Kalimdor. Trade routes crisscross the landscape leading to and from more inviting regions, and the most notable route is the Gold Road that runs north-to-south through the Barrens and beyond. Rumours suggest that precious minerals and treasure-filled ruins await those with the courage to investigate.

  +
Patch 3.0 introduced the achievement system, which includes rewards for tabard collectors. Upon obtaining a tabard, a general achievement called "Represent" is granted; subsequent achievement points are granted at ten and twenty-five tabards, with the latter granting the Tabard of the Achiever. There is no current plan to alleviate the amount of bag space taken up by tabards as has been done with mount and non-combat pet collections (which grant similar achievements), but Blizzard has said it is a possibility in the future. However, keeping tabards is not required for the achievement; only equipping them. You can equip and sell or delete each tabard as you get it, and it will still count toward the achievement. Some tabards can be discarded and repurchased or reacquired at a tabard vendor. These generally include rewards from non-repeatable quests and achievements (such as the Green Trophy Tabard of the Illidari).
−
History
−
The Barrens was once a thriving forest under the protection of the night elves and their kind. Several kaldorei settlements dotted the land, and there was no ocean for miles. Then came the Burning Legion and the Great Sundering, which shook ancient Kalimdor to the bedrock. This forested landscape transformed into a scorched plain and is battered now each day by the sun's rays. The Barrens is a sprawling and arid savanna that stretches between the Stonetalon Mountains to the west and Durotar to the east. The grasslands and mesas of Mulgore rise to the southwest, while the wetlands of Dustwallow Marsh lie to the southeast.

  +
both
−
The majority of the region consists of vast plains. Mountains to the west hold in heated air, creating the swirling winds that rage across the plains. These windstorms stir up dust devils and tear apart anything larger than the small but tenacious scrub trees. Water is more valuable than gold in the Barrens, and the locations of hidden watering holes are the residents' most closely-held secrets. Dry riverbeds and a never-ending spider web of canyons make any journey across the Barrens a dangerous and winding trek. The few brave adventurers willing to scrape out a life on the arid plains inevitably run afoul of centaur warbands or quilboar raiding parties. Despite its often uninviting terrain and hostile inhabitants, the Barrens receive a good deal of interest from Alliance and Horde alike, as well as races native to Kalimdor. Trade routes crisscross the landscape leading to and from more inviting regions, most notably the Gold Road that runs north-to-south through the Barrens and beyond, and rumors suggest that precious minerals and ruins await those with the courage to investigate.

Tabard vendors
−

  +
There are, generally, two types of vendor that tabards can be purchased from.

  +
Tabards associated with a faction are almost always available from the Quartermasters for that faction.
−
Centaur warbands are most often seen in the Barrens' canyons, though they roam as far as the river that forms its eastern border with Durotar. Fearlessly aggressive, the centaur are known for their savagery, especially against tauren and night elves. They are not above attacking trade caravans also, for the goods or just for the sake of violence. Travelers who survive the centaur’s battle lust are used as slave labor in the hardscrabble mines the centaur carve into the hard-baked earth. Displaced from Durotar by Orcs, quilboar have built crude villages along the river that separates the orc nation from the Barrens. From there, they strike out across the river to raid settlements or deeper into the Barrens to attack caravans along the Gold Road. The caravan raids have hurt the goblin trade princes’ profits, so they have started negotiations to pay the quilboar gold and goods to protect caravans against centaur warbands. The quilboar have also erected a fortress called Razorfen Downs in the southeastern Barrens. Razorfen is a sprawling mass of giant, twisting thorns and crude mud huts. It serves as the center of quilboar society. Other dangers include harpies who watch from perches atop mesas in the northern Barrens and large beasts such as lions and thunder lizards - though these creatures tend to avoid the Gold Road. Native dangers have not stopped the Ironforge dwarves from establishing a stronghold near the titan excavation site of Bael Modan. The centaur have made forays against it, but are repelled decisively each time. Scouts claim that the centaur are amassing other tribes to launch a major attack, but the dwarves are unconcerned. Each day that passes sees Bael Modan grow stronger as the inhabitants build up its defenses.

  +
Visitor's Centers in most major cities have tabard vendors who sell Guild tabards. They also sell:
−
When the orcs under the new Warchief Thrall had landed on the Barrens, it saw civilization anew. The Horde built new settlements among the dry grasses and arid hills, and placed the Barrens solidly into the heart of Horde territory. The Horde has set up numerous outposts in this barren land, the largest being the Crossroads at the intersection of two major roads, and Camp Taurajo, a tauren outpost near the border to Mulgore. The Barrens are also dotted with numerous farms populated by orcs and their families, and guard towers manned by orcish and tauren guards.

  +
* Burning Crusade faction tabards
  +
* Honor rank tabards
  +
* Battleground tabards
  +
These additional tabards have the same purchase restrictions and costs from the visitor's center vendor as they do from the relevant quartermaster.

  +
Guild tabards
−
Razorfen Downs lies just opposite the road, but this dungeon has been infested by agents of the Scourge, and poses great threat to anyone who is traveling to or from the Thousand Needles.

  +
Guild tabards can be purchased for 1 from a guildmaster in the Visitor's Center of any faction capital city. Guild leaders can customize the symbol and color scheme of the guild's tabard for 10.

It passes through the Barrens, and you can jump off (and survive!) while over Taurajo or the Crossroads.

Honor rank tabards are an honor reward for PvP fighting under the Honor System (battlegrounds).

*Scout's Tabard is red (more accurately a very deep orange) with the Horde's emblem and white trim.

  +
Private's Tabard and Scout's Tabard are purchasable from all tabard vendors (except Dalaran's) for 50 Honor points.
−
:If you are a Forsaken or blood elf, take the goblin zeppelin to Orgrimmar, the Zeppelin Tower is just north of the Undercity, then go down to Razor Hill and use the same route as orcs and trolls.

The Barrens are huge, one of the largest zones in the game. The land is mostly flat, with a few hills scattered throughout. The climate is harsh and hot, but survivable due to several lush oasis. With a stretch of coastline to the east, mountains to the northwest, plains to the west, forest to the north, marsh to the southeast, and the desert conditions to the south and northeast, the Barrens is surrounded by extremely varied landscapes.

The Barrens contain three instanced dungeons, the Wailing Caverns, Razorfen Kraul, and Razorfen Downs. The Horde entrance to Warsong Gulch is located to the north. There are two Horde aligned travel hubs in this zone: the Crossroads and Camp Taurajo, in addition to the flight path and boat in Ratchet available to both factions. There are no raid dungeons in the Barrens.

The Barrens are home to several characters of note. At the Crossroads, Sergra Darkthorn sends promising young adventurers to prove their worth to the Horde by hunting local wild creatures. She is assisted in her efforts by Jorn Skyseer in Camp Taurajo, who also refers them to continue their quests in Thunder Bluff. And at his fortified camp west of the Crossroads, the beleaguered Regthar Deathgate fights a one-man battle to keep the savage centaur from breaking through the Horde defenses.

Being such a huge zone, the Barrens has a wealth of quests for Horde characters between level 10 and level 20. Of particular note are the hunting quests given by Sergra Darkthorn at the Crossroads, which lead to similar quests in other zones. Many quests in the Barrens deal with fighting back the centaur and the quilboars. In addition, the Venture Company has taken a foothold in the northern Barrens and several quests involve investigating and causing trouble for them.

Notes and Other Info
−
* The Barrens is decisively one of the largest zones in World of Warcraft, and running from Mor'shan Rampart near Ashenvale to the Great Lift near Thousand Needles can be daunting even for players with mounts.

−
* Currently, the Barrens has the widest level range of any single zone spanning 15 levels.

−
* The Barrens is infamous as a very busy secondary zone shared by tauren, orcs and trolls. Undead players also often come here between levels 10 to 25. With three instances and multiple travel hubs, it is a busy "in-between" area traversed by higher-level characters as well. This is a major contributing factor to the high volume of the chat in this region.

−
* There is also a band of Alliance to the south near Camp Taurajo. There is a level 24 human mage and 3 night elves level 25, all elite. In addition to attacking you on sight, they drop a scroll that starts a quest. Note that they are all mounted and ride in a group, and enable PvP when attacked.

−
* The Crossroads is also a popular destination for Alliance raids as it is a good meeting point to raid Orgrimmar.

−
−
Avoiding the Barrens
−
Following the release of The Burning Crusade expansion, Horde players now can completely bypass the Barrens (And the rest of Kalimdor if they wish to) by questing in Ghostlands and then moving onto Silverpine Forest and Tarren Mill.

−
−
There are a number of reasons that a player might choose to do so:

−
* To avoid the overpopulation and competition from other players.

−
* It seems to be generally quicker to level, partially due to the decreased distance between key areas.

−
* Quests are much easier.

−
* For players generally focused on solo play rather than grouping up.

−
* Completing quests to get items with Tranquillien Reputation and quest rewards.

After the third expansion, the zone will be split in two with a lava river separating the Northern Barrens and Southern Barrens. A fortified gate and high wall now separates the southern Barrens from Mulgore. The zone will be split into Northern (about the same level range as it is now) and Southern Barrens (levels 30-35). Camp Taurajo will be burnt to the ground by the Alliance, who begin to move into Southern Barrens (no doubt from Northwatch, or perhaps Bael Modan), constructing guard towers throughout. Also portions of the southern part of the zone will become lush, thanks to the efforts of druid Naralex; however, the Emerald Nightmare will be pouring out into the zone, causing trouble. Finally, the pirates near Ratchet will be forced out, and Mankrik will find his wife's body. The lava at The Barrens is non-flyable area, where flying mount will be dismounted if flied over the lava.

Revision as of 15:23, 27 March 2011

Tabard refers to a type of clothing bearing a symbol or design and worn in the tabard equipment slot over a character's chest armor. It is a purely cosmetic item intended to add individuality to a character's look, similar to a shirt.

Overview

Historically, a tabard serves both as a sleeveless shirt or coat (often over armor), and as a means of displaying heraldry (as livery). For players, it can show membership in a guild or (for roleplay purposes) allegiance to a particular group, boast of deeds performed, or simply be decorative.

Patch 3.0 introduced the achievement system, which includes rewards for tabard collectors. Upon obtaining a tabard, a general achievement called "Represent" is granted; subsequent achievement points are granted at ten and twenty-five tabards, with the latter granting the Inv chest cloth 30 [Tabard of the Achiever]. These generally include rewards from non-repeatable quests and achievements (such as the Inv shirt 15 [Green Trophy Tabard of the Illidari]).

Tabard vendors

There are, generally, two types of vendor that tabards can be purchased from.

Tabards associated with a faction are almost always available from the Quartermasters for that faction.

Visitor's Centers in most major cities have tabard vendors who sell Guild tabards. They also sell:

 • Burning Crusade faction tabards
 • Honor rank tabards
 • Battleground tabards

These additional tabards have the same purchase restrictions and costs from the visitor's center vendor as they do from the relevant quartermaster.

Guild tabards

Guild tabards can be purchased for 1g from a guildmaster in the Visitor's Center of any faction capital city. Guild leaders can customize the symbol and color scheme of the guild's tabard for 10g.

See below for web-based tabard design tools.

Once your tabard crest has been created, it will take another 10g every time you wish to make a change to it.

Honor rank tabards

Honor rank tabards are an honor reward for PvP fighting under the Honor System (battlegrounds).

Enlisted tabards were available for 1g at rank one Alliance Achievement pvp a 01 [Private] and Horde Achievement pvp h 01 [Scout]).

Inv misc tabardpvp 01 [Private's Tabard] and Inv misc tabardpvp 02 [Scout's Tabard] are purchasable from all tabard vendors (except Dalaran's) for 50 Honor points.

Officers' tabards were available for 4g at rank six Knight (rank) and Stone Guard). Somewhat more glorified, these look similar to the enlisted tabards, but are significantly more detailed.

Similarly, these tabards are now purchasable for 100 Honor points.

Battleground tabards

Battleground tabards can be obtained at various reputation with each faction through vendor purchase or quest completion. These tabards have a unique appearance.

Alterac Valley tabards are purchasable from all tabard vendors (except Dalaran's) and the Supply Officers at the entrance to either BG for 2,678 (Pvpcurrency-honor-alliancePvpcurrency-honor-horde [Honor Points]).

 • Inv shirt guildtabard 01 [Stormpike Battle Tabard] has a red backdrop with golden trim, with the emblem of a spear with a golden bolt at the bottom.
 • Inv shirt guildtabard 01 [Frostwolf Battle Tabard] has a blue backdrop with white trim, bearing a wolf's head at the center, with a crude shield covering it, both made out of blue and white, and with ice-colored and shaped symbols signifying the cold of Alterac Valley.

Arathi Basin tabards are available upon attaining exalted reputation with AllianceLeague of Arathor or Horde Defilers and completing Quest:Control Five Bases or Quest:Take Five Bases.

Warsong Gulch tabards are purchasable from all tabard vendors (except Dalaran's) and the Supply Officers at the entrance to either BG for 2,059 (Pvpcurrency-honor-alliancePvpcurrency-honor-horde [Honor Points]).

The Inv shirt guildtabard 01 [Tabard of Conquest] is awarded to players who complete the Achievement bg winwsg [Master of Isle of Conquest] achievement.

Arena tabards

Arena tabards can be obtained by earning enough arena points during given arena seasons. These tabards have a unique appearance.

Other tabards

Past event tabards

These tabards were available for a limited time, and cannot be obtained currently. Some of these tabards may be reacquired from tabard vendors if the player had previously owned them.

Burning Crusade tabards

Bc icon This section concerns content related to The Burning Crusade.

Unless otherwise stated, exalted reputation with the respective faction is needed to purchase their tabard. These faction tabards are purchased from the faction's quartermaster for 1g, 90s after discount.

Wrath of the Lich King tabards

The Argent Tournament Tabards are available from each faction once you become their Champion. They each cost 50 Champion's Seal Champion's Seals.

Cataclysm tabards

Unobtainable tabards

These tabards are worn by NPCs but cannot be obtained by players, though some can be approximated with certain guild tabard designs.

Notes

Inv banner 01 [Primal Hakkari Tabard] is a tabard that cannot be worn. It is used to create the Zandalar Tribe epic chest-piece for paladins, druids, and shamans.

Although shields are often used to display heraldry, they have more than cosmetic purpose in the game. Not all characters can wield a shield, and the attributes of a shield are intrinsically linked to the appearance of that shield. For roleplay purposes, tabards are superior in that all characters can wear one, and they have no effect upon other abilities of that character.

 1. ^ Although the actual tabard is not obtainable, you can appear to wear one by wearing Inv chest cloth 36 [Dalaran Wizard's Robe]; a cloth chest armor that drops randomly from Dalaran NPCs in Silverpine Forest. Only Horde can obtain the robe, as these NPCs are Friendly to Alliance. However, they can be sold at neutral Auction Houses. In addition, the Inv shirt guildtabard 01 [Tabard of the Kirin Tor] is available for sale.
 2. ^ a b This particular Scarlet Crusade tabard is unobtainable. It is worn by many of the higher ranking members of the organization. The Inv misc cape 18 [Tabard of the Scarlet Crusade], which is worn by the lowest-ranking members of the Crusade, is obtainable. See the Other Tabards section above.
 3. ^ There is a tabard similar to this that can be obtained through the Argent Tournament.
