After the disaster at Angrathar, in which the Forsaken led by Grand Apothecary Putress ambushed the Alliance and the rest of the Horde with their New Plague, both Warchief Thrall and King Varian Wrynn decided to try and take it back.

The Horde forces assaulted the front gates of the city while the Alliance Forces charged in through the sewer entrance.

Ultimately, both Varimathras and Putress were killed, and Varian confronted Thrall in the Royal Quarter. Varian declared war on the Horde, and the two nearly killed one another, but Lady Jaina Proudmoore intervened by freezing the combatants solid and teleporting all Alliance Forces out.
