Lieutenant Commander? I like the sound of that!

Titles are displayed before or after the character's name, usually as an indication of the character's achievements. While a character may have earned multiple titles, only one can be displayed at a time — players can choose which title to display, if any, in the Character Info frame. Prior to Patch 2.0, characters could only earn titles through the Honor System, and could not alter which title was displayed.

With the release of Patch 2.0 and the Burning Crusade, players can no longer obtain or improve their Honor System title, but can choose to display their highest lifetime title they've earned before the patch. Future Titles

More titles may be added into the game at a future point, including the reintroduction of the old honor system titles, but there's nothing concrete about either development in the foreseeable future.

Re: Old PvP titles, let us buy them? | 01:23:28, 05 December 2006 | Drysc
We do plan on making the current honor rank titles available again at some point in the future as rewards of some type, however no definite plans have been made and no set methods for how they would be obtained have been decided.
Re: WoW Should Add/Steal A Title System | 00:48:50, 02 December 2006 | Tseric
While the shift to the new Honor system will "lock" a certain number of titles, it will not remove them completely.

In fact, we are already adding titles for specific events and have room to develop methods to gain other titles in the future.

Granted, most of the titles available currently are directly related to PvP and the Arena ranking system particularly, but there are other examples:

  • Achieving Exalted reputation in all Battlegrounds will confer a title.
  • The first gong ringer of the Ahn'Qiraj event will be conferred a title
For future development, we plan to develop other methods by which titles can be gained, but we also wish to keep them rare, as providing a clear path to title gain dilutes the value of the title.

Re: Constructive Feedback for server first ti | 11:40:27, 04 September 2009 | Tigole
We've decided to remove the titles for the Realm First Feats of Strength that are associated with reaching level 80. We've also removed the titles associated with the Realm First Feats of Strength associated with gaining 450 skill in the professions and secondary skill. Lastly, we've removed the title associated with Realm First to accomplish the Northrend Vanguard achievement.
