Cold Snap is a trainable mage talent that resets the cooldowns of all Frost spells. It is an instant-cast ability that requires no mana. Cold Snap requires 21 points in the Frost tree to learn, and it is an essential component of both PvE and PvP Frost builds. In PvE, its primary use is to increase DPS by making the spells Icy Veins and Summon Water Elemental available more frequently. In PvP, Cold Snap is most commonly used as an emergency or defensive spell, allowing immediate use of Ice Block and Frost Nova. (However, it cannot be used while under crowd control effects.)

Cooldown
Cold Snap has a relatively long 8-minute cooldown. This can be shortened by allocating 1 or 2 points into the Frost talent Cold as Ice, which reduces the cooldowns for Cold Snap, Ice Barrier, and Summon Water Elemental by 10/20%. Cold Snap's cooldown is always reset upon entering a new arena.
Tips
Cold Snap does not get locked out by counterspell interrupts when the Frost school is interrupted. Cold Snap will reset the cooldowns as long as the mage is not also silenced. This can be useful in emergencies, where the frost school is locked and the mage needs to Ice Block or use another frost escape. This is, however, a costly use of a long cooldown ability.
Known bugs
Cold Snap sometimes fails to reset cooldowns for every frost spell. This is a very rare, but unintended occurrence.
Past changes
Patch 2.0.1 (2006-12-05): The tooltip has been adjusted to indicate it only resets cooldowns caused by Frost spells. e.g.: Cold Snap will not reset the cooldown caused by Dragon's Breath (which has a shared cooldown with Cone of Cold).
Patch 2.3.2 (2008-01-08): Cooldown has been reduced to 8 minutes. With the talent Ice Floes 2/2 it is reduced to 6.4 minute cooldown. Talent also no longer resets the cooldown of Fire Ward.
