Uses

  • Useful in instances and raids in which the pet is not being used as a tank. Cower will help make certain that the mobs focus on the main tank, reducing the chance that the pet will die and lose happiness.
  • There is also a certain kiting trick that a hunter can use, in which Cower makes things run more smoothly. See below.

Limitations

  • May not work if the pet has accumulated too much aggro, and the other players too little.
  • Not very useful for soloing hunters; Cower makes it more likely that the mob will run towards the hunter, forcing them into melee combat.

Tips and tactics

Cower can be used in certain cases where a hunter wants to kite a powerful mob back and forth between himself/herself and his/her pet. The hunter starts by allowing the pet to obtain a little bit of aggro on the mob, and then tells the pet to stay in place. Then the hunter has the pet cower, while he/she proceeds to attack the mob and kite it away from the pet. (The pet still has some threat, as threat can't actually drop to zero except with death and certain abilities.) When the mob closes in on the hunter, the hunter can Feign Death, and the mob will turn to fight the pet again. As the mob starts running back to the pet, the hunter gets up and follows it. As the pet is about to get attacked, the hunter can attack the mob again, and have the pet set to cower, so the mob will go after the hunter again. This can be repeated so long as the pet stays alive, and the hunter’s Feign Death is usable (and not resisted). Cower is not needed for this strategy, but can be useful in ensuring the mob follows the hunter exactly when the hunters wants the mob to.

Patch changes

  • Patch 3.3.0 (PTR): Redesigned. This ability no longer affects threat, and instead reduces damage taken by the pet by 40% for 6 seconds with a 45-second cooldown. While cowering, the pet's movement speed is 50% of normal speed. Cower now only has a single rank and is available at pet level 20.
