Tabard refers to a type of clothing bearing a symbol or design and worn in the tabard equipment slot over a character's chest armor. It is a purely cosmetic item intended to add individuality to a character's look, similar to a shirt.

Historically, a tabard serves both as a sleeveless shirt or coat (often over armor), and as a means of displaying heraldry (as livery). For players, it can show membership in a guild or (for roleplay purposes) allegiance to a particular group, boast of deeds performed, or simply be decorative.
−
The Dark Iron clan (a.k.a. Clan Dark Iron, Dark Iron dwarf) was ruled by the Sorcerer-thane Thaurissan and was unsuccessful in seizing control of Ironforge from the Bronzebeard clan and the Wildhammer clan. Now ruled by Emperor Dagran Thaurissan, the Dark Irons live in Blackrock Mountain as the slaves of Ragnaros. Dark Iron dwarves are neither mountain dwarves nor hill dwarves but rather considered just shadowy, wandering sorcerers.LoC

  +
The only tabard available to players upon the release of World of Warcraft was the guild tabard. The release of battlegrounds and the honor system saw a variety of new tabards introduced, identifying a player's rank or standing with a particular battleground faction. The Scourge Invasion also added a small number of tabards. In World of Warcraft: The Burning Crusade, each faction in Outland was given its own tabard, available at exalted status. World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King continues this trend, but has lower (or no) reputation requirements and instead utilizes faction tabards in a system known as championing for farming reputation.
−
History
−
Like all dwarves, the dwarves of the Dark Iron clan are descendants of the earthen.

  +
Patch 3.0 introduced the achievement system, which includes rewards for tabard collectors. Upon obtaining a tabard, a general achievement called "Represent" is granted; subsequent achievement points are granted at ten and twenty-five tabards, with the latter granting the Tabard of the Achiever. There is no current plan to alleviate the amount of bag space taken up by tabards as has been done with mount and non-combat pet collections (which grant similar achievements), but Blizzard has said it is a possibility in the future. However, keeping tabards is not required for the achievement; only equipping them. You can equip and sell or delete each tabard as you get it, and it will still count toward the achievement. Some tabards can be discarded and repurchased or reacquired at a tabard vendor. These generally include rewards from non-repeatable quests and achievements (such as the Green Trophy Tabard of the Illidari).
−
Just prior to the War of the Three Hammers the Dark Iron clan, ruled by the Sorcerer-thane Thaurissan, inhabited the darkest, deepest crevices of Ironforge. The Dark Iron clan was unsuccessful in wresting control of Ironforge from the Bronzebeard clan and Wildhammer clan during the War of the Three Hammers.

Thaurissan and his Dark Irons vowed revenge against Ironforge. He took his followers south and founded a city (which he named after himself) within the beautiful Redridge Mountains. Despite years of prosperity, Thaurissan and his sorceress wife, Modgud did not soften in their desire to defeat the Bronzebeards and Wildhammers; they launched a two-pronged assault against both Ironforge and Grim Batol. Thaurissan was routed by Bronzebeard at Ironforge, and retreated back to the Redridge Mountains. Modgud's assault on Grim Batol was marginally more effective, though she herself fell in battle.

  +
Tabard vendors
−
As the combined forces of Ironforge and Grim Batol marched on Thaurissan, he attempted to summon an ancient power sleeping beneath the Redridge Mountains. Ragnaros the Firelord, immortal lord of all fire elementals, had been banished by the Titans when the world was young. Now, freed by Thaurissan's call, Ragnaros erupted into being once again. Ragnaros' apocalyptic rebirth into Azeroth shattered the Redridge Mountains and created a raging volcano at the center of the devastation. The volcano, known as Blackrock Mountain, was bordered by the Searing Gorge to the north and the Burning Steppes to the south. Though Thaurissan was killed by the forces he had unleashed, his surviving brethren were ultimately enslaved by Ragnaros and his elementals. They remain within the Spire to this day.

There are, generally, two types of vendor that tabards can be purchased from.

  +
Tabards associated with a faction are almost always available from the Quartermasters for that faction.
−
(above paraphrased, ©2005 Blizzard Entertainment)

  +
Visitor's Centers in most major cities have tabard vendors who sell Guild tabards. They also sell:
−
Modern Dark Irons
  +
* Burning Crusade faction tabards
−

  +
* Honor rank tabards
  +
* Battleground tabards
  +
These additional tabards have the same purchase restrictions and costs from the visitor's center vendor as they do from the relevant quartermaster.

  +
Guild tabards
−
The modern Dark Iron clan serves Ragnaros. They are centered in the depths of Blackrock Mountain, in their dark capital of Shadowforge City. A great deal of Dark Iron activity can be seen in the Searing Gorge and in the Badlands. There have also been sightings in the Wetlands, Loch Modan, the Burning Steppes, and Dun Morogh.

  +
Guild tabards can be purchased for 1 from a guildmaster in the Visitor's Center of any faction capital city. Guild leaders can customize the symbol and color scheme of the guild's tabard for 10.

  +
See below for web-based tabard design tools.
−
Dark Irons are enemies of both the Alliance and the Horde. They seem to have helped Sicco Thermaplugg in the invasion of the Troggs in Gnomeregan, as some Dark Iron dwarves and even an Dark Iron Ambassador can be found in the poisoned gnome capital. It's unclear what exactly they did, though.

  +
Once your tabard crest has been created, it will take another 10 every time you wish to make a change to it.
−
Some Dark Irons have broken ties with the clan in order to seek out business relations with the Alliance and Horde. This group is known as the Thorium Brotherhood. The Dark Irons have proclaimed the Brotherhood an enemy of the clan for their relations, and the two groups are now at war.

  +
Honor rank tabards
−
The Dark Irons have recently heard of the Forest Troll Serpent Goddess Ula-tek being reborn in Zul'Aman, and reckoned that this (deemed) Old God might get along well with their Elemental Lord Ragnaros. They have since sent emissaries to Ghostlands in order to get to know each other and become allies.

Honor rank tabards are an honor reward for PvP fighting under the Honor System (battlegrounds).

Enlisted tabards were available for 1 at rank one Private and Scout (achievement)).
−
Physical appearance
  +
*Private's Tabard is blue with a gold lion design on the front of it, essentially what Stormwind guards wear.
−
Dark Iron dwarves easily stand out from the other two clans. They physically resemble Bronzebeard dwarves, but they are less stocky and more dexterous. Their skin is pale white to sickly gray, and their hair and beards are white, black, or orange. Their eyes glow with orange flame - one of many gifts from their fiery master, Ragnaros.MG In WoW they have darkish gray or black skin, with red glowing eyes.

  +
*Scout's Tabard is red (more accurately a very deep orange) with the Horde's emblem and white trim.

  +
Private's Tabard and Scout's Tabard are purchasable from all tabard vendors (except Dalaran's) for 50 Honor points.

Officers' tabards were available for 4 at rank six Knight (rank) and Stone Guard). Somewhat more glorified, these look similar to the enlisted tabards, but are significantly more detailed.
−
Dark Iron dwarves avoid straight combat, preferring ambushes and ranged assaults. Dark Irons are self-serving, with little of the clan loyalty so dominant in the other two dwarven clans. A Dark Iron willingly flees or betrays his allies in order to save his own life.MG

Dark Iron dwarves speak Common and Dwarven. Dark Iron dwarves sometimes learn Goblin and Low Common to speak with the creatures around their territory, and their elemental masters teach some of them their ancient language, Kalimag.MG

Battleground tabards
−
Dark Iron Dwarf Forces Like most dwarves, Dark Iron dwarves follow a rigid and militarized organization. Every Dark Iron dwarf soldier is well trained and well armed, often with the finest equipment he can afford. However, the years under the dirt, as well as a diabolical outlook on life, change the Dark Irons’ tactics. Skullduggery and backstabbing are just as potent as a good line formation. Even better, in some cases.

  +
Battleground tabards can be obtained at various reputation with each faction through vendor purchase or quest completion. These tabards have a unique appearance.

  +
Alterac Valley tabards are purchasable from all tabard vendors (except Dalaran's) and the Supply Officers at the entrance to either BG for 2,678 (Honor Points).
−
Dark Iron dwarves are cunning, and quicker than other dwarves. Whereas a unit of Bronzebeard dwarves would march straight into enemy lines, Dark Iron dwarves prefer setting up ambushes, or sending lightningfast strikes. Dark Iron dwarves grew comfortable in the shadows over the many years of their exile and enslavement, and are not above petty tricks such as traps and assassination.

  +
*Stormpike Battle Tabard has a red backdrop with golden trim, with the emblem of a spear with a golden bolt at the bottom.
  +
*Frostwolf Battle Tabard has a blue backdrop with white trim, bearing a wolf's head at the center, with a crude shield covering it, both made out of blue and white, and with ice-colored and shaped symbols signifying the cold of Alterac Valley.

  +
<gallery>
−
Most Dark Iron dwarves form smaller units than their Bronzebeard cousins, to spread their numbers and allow for flanking and pincer maneuvers. Rogues and assassins mix evenly with warriors and marksmen.

Arathi Basin tabards are available upon attaining exalted reputation with Alliance Icon SmallLeague of Arathor or Horde Icon Small Defilers and completing Quest:Control Five Bases or Quest:Take Five Bases.
−
Dark Iron dwarves are also well versed in arcane magic, more so than any other dwarven race. Due to untold years of living next to molten lava and fire, the Dark Iron clan developed a strong link to fl ames and fire magic. Fire-aligned elementalists battle alongside elite marksmen and stealthy skulkers, raining death on Blackrock Depths’ enemies. Battles against Dark Iron dwarves are often hellish, taxing both sides as the Dark Iron elementalists grow overzealous.

Dark Iron dwarves are still dwarves, and bring heavy firepower to the field. However, as in all elements of Dark Iron warfare, the dwarves prize subterfuge and sneak attacks over direct confrontation. Dark Iron snipers lie in wait for incoming enemies, while dwarven bombardiers place bombs in strategic places. Great siege engines rumble softly, set to ambush tight passes or simply mow over enemies with great disregard. Occasionally Dark Iron tinkers unleash entire payloads of flame and brimstone on opposing forces.

Dark Iron dwarves have unconventional backup as well. Fire elementals, servants of Ragnaros, appear intermittently with dwarven forces. Unlike the dwarves, fire elementals have no care for the art of subtlety. Lava elementals and flamewakers roar through battle, burning anything that gets in their way.DF

−
With the presence of two other clans of dwarves with Dark Iron appearance, it is possible that the term Dark Iron refers to both an ethnic group of dwarves (such as hill or mountain dwarf) and the Dark Iron clan itself (which apparently lords over the other two lesser clans). Another possibility is that there is not a single Dark Iron clan, and instead several smaller clans are ruled over by a single Dark Iron Emperor who as such is lord over a confederacy of clans.

Although shields are often used to display heraldry, they have more than cosmetic purpose in the game. For roleplay purposes, tabards are superior in that all characters can wear one, and they have no effect upon other abilities of that character.

Revision as of 14:51, 27 March 2011

Tabard refers to a type of clothing bearing a symbol or design and worn in the tabard equipment slot over a character's chest armor. It is a purely cosmetic item intended to add individuality to a character's look, similar to a shirt.

Overview

Historically, a tabard serves both as a sleeveless shirt or coat (often over armor), and as a means of displaying heraldry (as livery). For players, it can show membership in a guild or (for roleplay purposes) allegiance to a particular group, boast of deeds performed, or simply be decorative.

Patch 3.0 introduced the achievement system, which includes rewards for tabard collectors. Upon obtaining a tabard, a general achievement called "Represent" is granted; subsequent achievement points are granted at ten and twenty-five tabards, with the latter granting the Inv chest cloth 30 [Tabard of the Achiever]. These generally include rewards from non-repeatable quests and achievements (such as the Inv shirt 15 [Green Trophy Tabard of the Illidari]).

Tabard vendors

There are, generally, two types of vendor that tabards can be purchased from.

Tabards associated with a faction are almost always available from the Quartermasters for that faction.

Visitor's Centers in most major cities have tabard vendors who sell Guild tabards. They also sell:

 • Burning Crusade faction tabards
 • Honor rank tabards
 • Battleground tabards

These additional tabards have the same purchase restrictions and costs from the visitor's center vendor as they do from the relevant quartermaster.

Guild tabards

Guild tabards can be purchased for 1g from a guildmaster in the Visitor's Center of any faction capital city. Guild leaders can customize the symbol and color scheme of the guild's tabard for 10g.

See below for web-based tabard design tools.

Once your tabard crest has been created, it will take another 10g every time you wish to make a change to it.

Honor rank tabards

Honor rank tabards are an honor reward for PvP fighting under the Honor System (battlegrounds).

Enlisted tabards were available for 1g at rank one Alliance Achievement pvp a 01 [Private] and Horde Achievement pvp h 01 [Scout]).

Inv misc tabardpvp 01 [Private's Tabard] and Inv misc tabardpvp 02 [Scout's Tabard] are purchasable from all tabard vendors (except Dalaran's) for 50 Honor points.

Officers' tabards were available for 4g at rank six Knight (rank) and Stone Guard). Somewhat more glorified, these look similar to the enlisted tabards, but are significantly more detailed.

Similarly, these tabards are now purchasable for 100 Honor points.

Battleground tabards

Battleground tabards can be obtained at various reputation with each faction through vendor purchase or quest completion. These tabards have a unique appearance.

Alterac Valley tabards are purchasable from all tabard vendors (except Dalaran's) and the Supply Officers at the entrance to either BG for 2,678 (Pvpcurrency-honor-alliancePvpcurrency-honor-horde [Honor Points]).

 • Inv shirt guildtabard 01 [Stormpike Battle Tabard] has a red backdrop with golden trim, with the emblem of a spear with a golden bolt at the bottom.
 • Inv shirt guildtabard 01 [Frostwolf Battle Tabard] has a blue backdrop with white trim, bearing a wolf's head at the center, with a crude shield covering it, both made out of blue and white, and with ice-colored and shaped symbols signifying the cold of Alterac Valley.

Arathi Basin tabards are available upon attaining exalted reputation with AllianceLeague of Arathor or Horde Defilers and completing Quest:Control Five Bases or Quest:Take Five Bases.

Warsong Gulch tabards are purchasable from all tabard vendors (except Dalaran's) and the Supply Officers at the entrance to either BG for 2,059 (Pvpcurrency-honor-alliancePvpcurrency-honor-horde [Honor Points]).

The Inv shirt guildtabard 01 [Tabard of Conquest] is awarded to players who complete the Achievement bg winwsg [Master of Isle of Conquest] achievement.

Notes

Inv banner 01 [Primal Hakkari Tabard] is a tabard that cannot be worn. It is used to create the Zandalar Tribe epic chest-piece for paladins, druids, and shamans.

Although shields are often used to display heraldry, they have more than cosmetic purpose in the game. Not all characters can wield a shield, and the attributes of a shield are intrinsically linked to the appearance of that shield. For roleplay purposes, tabards are superior in that all characters can wear one, and they have no effect upon other abilities of that character.
