Dishonorable Kill

From WoWWiki

Jump to: navigation, search

Part of the Honor System (pre-2.0). You can gain DKs by killing an opposing-faction player or NPC of significantly lower level than you (their level number is gray) or certain NPCs (like Civilians). The amount of DKs you get may affect your Rank. For more detailed information regarding the full impact of each DK, please see Honor System formulas.

Abbreviated "DK".

This concept was removed from the game in patch 2.0.

From Patch 2.0 Honor System Changes at the official site:

How will dishonorable kills factor in to the new honor system?
Although this is subject to change, we are not currently planning to have dishonorable kills play any role in the honor system. The NPCs around the world will no longer be set as civilians, so killing them will not impact your ability to obtain honor points.

What is a 'Dishonorable kill'?

Any NPC that is marked with the green word 'Civilian' in its tooltip is considered a 'dishonorable kill'. The 'Civilian' marking will be applied to general NPC's such as vendors and quest NPCs as the level of the player begins to exceed the level of the NPC. This means that players of the appropriate level are allowed to kill general NPC's that are considered to present a fair fight.

Myths and Facts about DKs, as written by Savik of Dark Iron

(Please note these myths/facts are written from my own personal perspective, but I strived to make it as unbiased and accurate as possible)

Myth: Killing Civilians will lower your rep with your home cities (Faction controlled) and cause guards to attack you if it gets low enough.

Fact: Killing civilians does not, as far as I can see, lower your reputation with anyone. I killed 106 civs in a single day, and my reputation remained solid. I even checked through all of my combat logs, and found no loss of reputation. This is a serious myth because it was (at one point) going to be implemented, but pulled at the last second. Those who say it does, or that it gives the debuff ‘Mark of Shame’ are pulling your leg (The Mark of Shame is actually a debuff you receive for failing the quest Test of Lore: http://wow.allakhazam.com/db/quest.html?wquest=6628 ...NOT for killing Civilians)

Myth: Killing a Civilian gives an immediate Honor loss of 5k

Fact: This one is 100% false, unless I’m reading honor wrong. But, having tested this over a period of days, I feel I know exactly what the depreciation is. I killed 106 civs in a single day, starting at 77% into Rank 6. At the end I was at 63% into Rank 4. So, I only lost 2 ranks. If the 5k of honor loss were true, then I would have lost an effective 500k+ of honor. I haven’t even gained that much in all my PvPing! So how on earth could a civilian be worth a negative 5k of honor? They CAN’T! But what I –did- find was the actual amount lost is a static 2%. At one point that may be worth 5k of honor (To ranks 10 and up possibly, hence where the rumor may have got its start.) Now, this was only for those lower ranks, so a confirmation on this from someone in a higher rank would be excellent. As far as I can tell, however, it is a static 2%

Myth: The amount of rank lost increases for each dishonorable kill made that day.

Fact: This is a direct quote from Blizzard’s site, located at http://www.worldofwarcraft.com/pvp/pvp-article-part2.html Now, I’m not sure if this information is outdated or not, but this is actually true…were it reversed. You only lose a static 2% of your rank with each DK you accumulate. So at higher ranks, it’s more honor you lose, and thus a higher loss. But when you’re in lower ranks, it’s the same percentage, but a lower effective loss altogether. When I took down the 106 civlians in the single day, my loss was never more than 2% per each kill.

Myth: Killing a civilian will effectively ruin a whole days worth of small-medium Competitive PvP.

Fact: Taking the above into account, it’s possible that can be true, but I would say it would take about 10-15 DKs to ruin a full day’s worth of Honor earning. As for a week? It would take around 50 or so for the week.

Myth: Everyone gets the same DK amount when grouped, unlike Honor which splits itself.

Fact: DK is, in fact, SHARED. That means that when you are in a group of 2 or more, the negative effect of the DK is reduced by the amount of people and shared evenly amongst them all. For example, if you were in a 40 man raid group, and got 1 DK, that DK would be worth 1/40th of normal. It would take 39 more kills for you to get the –2% negative effect of a normal DK. This is perhaps the BIGGEST myth, as people have left raid groups rather than get a single DK, when it’s worth next to nothing in negative effects.

Effectively, a 40 man raid group could take down 120 civilians in a single raid, and only have 3 DKs worth of negative honor (-6% in rank) to show for it at the end. So the next time someone raises a huge stink about getting a single DK in a raid group, you’ll know to tell them ‘It’s worth next to nothing, so get over it’

Comment: This statement is not in fact true. We have raided Hammerfall and Tarren Mill in a 40 man raid. 29 DKs resulted in a drop from the beginning of rank 9 to half of rank 8, which would be more then 2%. DKs are not shared.

Myth: DKs will reduce the amount of Honor and bonus honor you have for the day.

Fact: Nope, not a chance. After I did my mass murder spree of 106, I went out and did a few BGs, earning a modest amount of honor (only 3.1k to add to what I already had for a total of 6.5k) and went out and killed a few more civs. The honor I gained for that day (and for that week) wasn’t touched in the slightest the next day.

Myth: DKs will not only reduce your rank immediately, but will also reduce even more on Maintenance Day, much like how you gain rank with honor.

Fact: Another myth, destroyed! Remember how I told you I went out and got honor on top of my huge amount of DKs? Well, instead of losing almost all my rank (as I sort of expected) I went UP in rank. I ended the week with about 117 HKs, 31% into Rank 4, and only 6.5k of honor. When I came back in after maintenance, I was up to 42% into Rank 4. So DKs only hit you once, and never again.
