- Seared to imperfection.[1]
Dragon's Breath is a talent-trained point-blank area of effect mage spell that deals fire direct damage and disorients all enemies for 5 seconds. The area of effect is similar to [Cone of Cold], a 90 degree arc region extending 10 yards in front of the caster.
Rank table
Rank | Damage | Level | Cost |
---|---|---|---|
1 | 370 - 430 | 50[2] | Talent |
2 | 454 - 526 | 56 | 19 |
3 | 574 - 666 | 64 | 22 |
4 | 680 - 790 | 70 | 25 |
5 | 935 - 1085 | 75 | 75 |
6 | 1101 - 1279 | 80 | 75 |
Notes
Disorient effects will break on any direct damage. Casting another damage spell will break the effect, but a dot such as from the Ignite talent will not break the effect.
Talent improvement
Dragon's Breath deals fire damage, and thus gains the benefit of the talents [Impact], Ignite, [Burning Soul], [Master of Elements], [Critical Mass], [Fire Power], [Pyromaniac], and Precision.
As with all mage spells capable of critical hits [Arcane Instability], Spell Power, [Molten Fury], [Playing with Fire], [Burnout], and [Shatter] can increase the effective damage output of this spell.
The [World in Flames] talent improves the critical strike chance of Dragon's Breath by 6% at max rank.
Tips and tricks
The disorient effect makes this spell not only useful to kite an opponent, but also to interrupt spell casting. Although there is no spell lockout such as with [Counterspell], interrupting a spell for 5 seconds is sometimes all you need.
A notable use for Dragon's Breath is that it will interrupt most all abilities that are otherwise impossible to interrupt. Several trash mobs in Black Temple, for instance, are uninterruptible, save for Dragon's Breath. While the target is immune to the actual disorient effect, their casting will be interrupted. Some examples of abilities that dragon's breath can interrupt include:
- Coilskar Sea-Caller's Forked Lightning, Hurricane, and Summon Geyser.
- Illidari Heartseeker's Rapid Shot.
Notes
This spell previously shared a cooldown with [Cone of Cold]. Using either spell would set the cooldown of the other. Casting Dragon's Breath would set the Cone of Cold cooldown to 20 seconds, and casting Cone of Cold would set the Dragon's Breath cooldown to 10 seconds.
The shared cooldown was removed in patch 3.0.2.
The disorient effect of Dragon's Breath was previously 3 seconds in duration. This too was changed in patch 3.0.2.
Patch changes
- Patch 3.3.0 (2009-12-08): The mana cost of this talent has been significantly reduced.
