Dragon whelps are the smallest member of the dragonkin species, representing the offspring of a brood. Whelps are easily the weakest variation of dragons. In most cases however, where there are whelps, their larger cousins are close by. (Extreme caution is advised if you are going to pet, hug, snuggle or feed a whelpling.)

Types of whelps

Dragon whelps come in a variety of colors and are all found in different locations.

Red whelps

• Located: Wetlands, Blackwing Lair

Blue whelps

• Located: Winterspring, Blackwing Lair

Green whelps

• Located: Swamp of Sorrows, Blackwing Lair, Temple of Atal'Hakkar, Bloodmyst Isle

Bronze whelps

• Located: Blackwing Lair

Black whelps

• Located: Badlands, Blackrock Spire, Blackwing Lair, Blade's Edge Mountains, Burning Steppes, Dustwallow Marsh, Redridge Mountains

Chromatic whelps

• Located: Blackrock Spire

Nether whelps

• Located: Blade's Edge Mountains

Hatched from eggs in Singing Ridge

Plagued whelps

• Located: Scholomance

Infinite whelps

Whelplings as pets

Even smaller and weaker than dragon whelps are dragon whelplings. These are pint-sized pet dragons that in most cases, are dropped by the dragon whelp versions of themselves.

  • Dropped by: Crimson Whelp, Flamesnorting Whelp, and Red Whelp. Level range: 23-27.

• Tiny Emerald Whelpling
  • Dropped by: Dreaming Whelp. Level range: 35-36.

•  [Dark Whelpling] (Tiny Black Whelpling)
  • Dropped by: Scalding Whelp, Searing Whelp. Level range: 41-43.

•  [Azure Whelpling] (Patch 2.3)
  • Dropped by blue dragonkin in Azshara.

• Netherwhelp
  • Obtained: Players may get this in the mail in-game if they purchased the Burning Crusade Collector's Edition, they are Bind on Pickup, and therefore can not be traded.

All whelpling pets (except the Netherwhelp) have a 1 in 1000 chance of dropping, according to Eyonix. [1]

Combat Dragonlings

Mimicked to represent dragon whelps, engineers have developed schematics to create mechanized version of these tiny dragons known as dragonlings. Unlike the pet whelplings, however, combat dragonlings are only temporary and limited to engineers only.
