Elemental Precision is a mage talent that decreases enemy chance to resist and mana cost of Frost and Fire spells by 1% per rank, up to 3% at max rank 3. The decreased chance for an enemy to resist is essentially equivalent to one percent chance to hit per rank, normally gained through spell hit rating. At level 70, each point is equivalent to 12.6 spell hit rating. In PvE raid situations, many mobs and especially bosses are up to three levels higher than the mage, increasing resist rate, thus making this talent very popular with raiding mages. The additional mana efficiency is also desirable for PvE.
| Rank | Chance to hit | Mana cost |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | + 1% | - 1% |
| 2 | + 2% | - 2% |
| 3 | + 3% | - 3% |
Normally a talent that does not scale with gear upgrades is not desirable. Although Elemental Precision is effectively equivalent to a static amount of spell hit rating, it is still a useful talent, because one needs static 17% to hit to ensure all spells will hit. Taking this talent means a mage can reach the spell hit cap sooner, focusing gear in other areas. The talent still scales appropriately with level, as well.
A similar talent Arcane Focus in the Arcane tree affects the chance enemies will resist Arcane spells.
See the article on Resistance for more information on the resistance chance of higher-level enemies.
Past changes
- This talent was introduced with the mage talent review in Patch 1.11. It originally reduced the chance an enemy will resist Frost and Fire spells by 2% per rank, up to 6% at rank 3.
- With Patch 2.0, the percent was reduced by half, to 1% per rank, and the mana cost reduction was added. But Elemental precision still gave 6% hit rating bonus to the Frostbolt spell (referred to as 'Ghost Hit').
- With Patch 3.0.2, that 'Ghost Hit' has been removed.
