Introduced in patch 2.3 to replace Weapon Skill, each point of expertise will reduce the chance that a mob will dodge or parry your melee attacks by 0.25%.

Expertise and Expertise Rating

Note that there is a difference between "expertise" and "expertise rating". Expertise rating is typically gained from item bonuses, and for each 3.92 expertise rating you equip, you gain 1 expertise at level 70.[citation needed] Expertise is typically gained from talents, and for each 1 point of expertise you reduce your chance to be dodged/parried by 0.25%. Thus it takes exactly 15.68 expertise rating at level 70 to reduce your chance to be dodged/parried by 1%.[citation needed]

Expertise Rating Required Per 1% Dodge/Parry
Level 60 Level 70 Level 80
10 15.77 32.79

Tanking

Expertise is of two-fold use to tanks. First, by reducing the target's avoidance, it improves a tank's threat generation (more of his attacks will land). More importantly, because mobs may attack more quickly after parrying an attack, expertise reduces the total damage that the tank may receive by reducing the chance that his target parries. The increase in attack speed varies (from 0-40% of the speed of the parried attack)[1], and can stack if multiple attacks are parried in rapid succession, leading to a potential source of massive burst damage.

DPS

Melee DPS also benefit from expertise. With sufficient expertise, melee classes can attack their target from the front without being dodged or parried (although facing restrictions, such as those on Backstab or Shred, still apply). It is possible to have enough expertise to prevent dodges and parries, but parries are much harder to prevent, and players without such high expertise values should remain behind the target to prevent parried attacks from increasing the target's attack speed against the tank.

Expertise against Bosses

The dodge and parry chances for boss-mobs is currently disputed, but combat parses tend to point at around 6.5% dodge and as high as 12-15% parry.[citation needed] Assuming 6.5% dodge and 15% parry, a player would need 26 expertise (about 102 expertise rating - 101.92 exactly) to negate a boss' dodge chance, and 60 expertise (roughly 236 expertise rating) to prevent parries.

To "cap" expertise against a raid boss, melee DPS need only concern themselves with the boss' dodge chance, provided that they attack from behind. This dictates a goal of 102 expertise rating, which is reasonably achievable given the gear added to the game in Patch 2.4. Tanks, however, attack from the front, and need to worry about both dodge and parry. As of Patch 2.4 it is actually possible to become unparryable as a tank.

Expertise from Talents

Warriors can gain 2/4/6 points of expertise from Vitality (Warrior talent), in the eighth tier of the Protection tree.

Paladins can gain 2/4/6 points of expertise from Combat Expertise, in the eighth tier of the Protection tree.

Rogues can gain 5/10 points of expertise from Weapon Expertise, in the sixth tier of the Combat tree.

Druids can gain 5/10 points of expertise from Primal Precision, in the fourth tier of the Feral tree.

Death Knights can gain 1/2/3/4/5 points of expertise from Blood Gorged, Tundra Stalker, and Rage of Rivendare. All of these talents are located in the tenth tiers of the Blood tree, Frost tree, and Unholy tree, respectively. Veteran of the Third War also gives 2/4/6 points of expertise, and is located in the fifth tier of the Blood tree.

Expertise from Racial Traits

Humans gain 3 expertise from their Sword and Mace Specialization trait when using a sword or a mace.

Dwarves gain 5 expertise from their Mace Specialization trait when using a mace.

Orcs gain 5 expertise from their Axe Specialization trait when using an axe.
