Father Inigo Montoy was a human priest previously located at Light's Hope Chapel in the Eastern Plaguelands. He was affiliated with the Brotherhood of the Light and the Argent Dawn, though secretly was an agent of the Lich King and the Scourge.

History[]

Inigo Montoy was once a revered cleric of the Argent Dawn. Having seen what the Scourge had done to Lordaeron, the Lich King having taken everything from him, he dedicated his whole life to fighting the undead.[1] A bastion of virtue for the Argent Dawn, he was a member of the Brotherhood of the Light and was present at Light's Hope Chapel during the first Scourge invasion and the assault on the Dread Citadel Naxxramas, during which he provided priests with the Vestments of Faith, restored from the desecrated vestments of the fallen heroes in Naxxramas.

Upon the fall of Kel'Thuzad, Father Montoy was delivered the Phylactery of Kel'Thuzad for payment.

However, the Argent Dawn reported later that they never received the phylactery. As it turned out, Montoy's true master was not the Brotherhood of the Light or the Argent Dawn at all. The Lich King himself had corrupted the virtuous priest, promising to rend the weakness from his soul.

Inigo returned the phylactery to Arthas, and was transformed into a lich, now known as Thel'zan the Duskbringer.[2] Thanks to his treachery, Kel'Thuzad was restored and Naxxramas returned to Northrend. Being referred to by the name he held in life, an existence he despised, particularly enrages Thel'zan — when Bolvar Fordragon does so, Thel'zan promises to kill him on the spot.

Gossip

The Lich King is attempting to make his presence known in our world. This must not be allowed to occur.

Gossip Tell me about faith, Father.

Faith... Some have lost it, others have found it. It cannot be destroyed and it cannot be created.
Or perhaps you speak of the vestments of Faith? Armor worn by our priests and most devout warriors into battle against the Scourge during the last war.
Aye, much of it is lost... Stolen by the fiends of Naxxramas.

Inspiration[]

Questionmark-medium
This article or section includes speculation, observations or opinions possibly supported by lore or by Blizzard officials. It should not be taken as representing official lore.

His name is very likely a tribute to the character Inigo Montoya from the book The Princess Bride by William Goldman, and the movie of the same name. He was a master swordsman who spoke those famous words, "Hello. My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die," which is now one of the most memorable quotes in fantasy.

Furthermore the inspiration for the name of Inigo Montoya might have been Ignatius (Íñigo) of Loyola, the founder and the first General of Jesuits. This supposed origin of the name might fit the WoW character, as Jesuits are often a part of various conspiracy theories (and the in-game Inigo seems to be a malevolent, plotting figure).

Interestingly, according to Wikipedia, Loyola's Jesuit Constitutions stressed absolute self-abnegation and obedience to Pope and superiors, as he put it: "perinde ac cadaver"; "well-disciplined like a corpse", which could be a very becoming motto for a servant of the Lich King and a member of the Scourge Inigo Montoy has become.

Some speculate that the name is more than just a tribute, and that it might have a deeper meaning. The fact that he obviously takes the phylactery of Kel'Thuzad for himself (or unknown masters) may be a hint to show that Kel'Thuzad might be Montoy's father (as the quote mentioned above would suggest), or some other close relative. Alternatively, Montoy's father could have been killed by Kel'Thuzad.

Inv misc coin 19 [Inigo's Copper Coin], fished from the fountain in the Eventide, at least states that Inigo wishes he had his father back in some context... or could just be a reference to Inigo Montoya's famous line.

Judging by the surname, he could be related to Daniel Montoy.
