Now that Blizzard has added the Dungeon Journal to the game, do wowwiki boss tactics entries need to give a comprehensive list of all of a boss's abilities? For the sake of completeness, I can see wanting to retain that, but for players who have read the DJ entries and want a simple list of tactics to apply, perhaps tactics pages should instead start with an intro paragraph, followed by a tactics summary that assumes that you've read the DJ (one for Normal, one for Heroic; or, for raid bosses, 10/25 normal, 10/25 heroic). Then the detailed list of abilities and mechanics can follow.

E.g. Corborus in Stonecore. The you've-already-read-the-DJ tactics summary could read something like this:

"Normal: Move out of the shard spray when he casts it. Once he burrows, avoid the groundquake where he'll pop up (4 times), and kill the Rock Borers that spawn, until he returns. Healers can use an AE heal to deal with Dampening Wave.

Heroic: Same, except: It is CRITICAL to AE the Crystal Shards as soon as possible; they do huge damage when they reach a player, and there's a lot of them. Rock Borers are a slightly bigger threat than in normal but are still easily killed or AE'd."

(Please don't argue with my actual recommended tactics for Corborus, this is just an example.) The idea is to provide a summary that will be meaningful to someone who's read the DJ or done the fight once or twice, hits the highlights, and is easily absorbed.

I share this general opinion. Players can get an exhaustive list of abilities anywhere, so that shouldn't be the focus of the article. An opening paragraph about the boss is nice, then jump right in to the tactics. The tactics section should include within-article links to whatever ability/mechanic is being discussed, and then we can throw together a comprehensive listing of abilities after the tactics section, like you've suggested. Focusing on tactics seems like a good idea to me, and hopefully others will offer their opinions as well. Raylan13@Wikia (talk) 14:15, July 6, 2011 (UTC)
Also sounds good to me. We will need to update Help:Mob articles to match this new guideline. I've also moved the tactics summary info to Help:Tactics summary, since it isn't really encyclopedic. --Gengar orange 22x22Beware the sneaky smile! Fandyllic (talk · contr) 6 Jul 2011 11:02 AM Pacific
Thanks, I'm not really familiar with the meta-stuff. Is there some kind of template we should use for the tactics summary section in each mob article, or should it just be hardcoded? --Athria (talk) 03:02, July 7, 2011 (UTC)
Right now there is no specific template for a "Tactics summary", but we could make one if we see a format that most people like. Currently mob articles (like boss articles) should be made starting with Help:Mob articles, but good boss articles like Boss 15 Atramedes can be basically copied (although this one doesn't have a Tactics summary section yet). --Gengar orange 22x22Beware the sneaky smile! Fandyllic (talk · contr) 8 Jul 2011 1:42 PM Pacific
I've been putting tactics summaries into all the bosses for Cataclysm 5-mans, mostly since those are the dungeons I run a lot. Having written 20 or so of them now, they don't really end up being big enough that I think any kind of templating is necessary. --Athria (talk) 02:41, July 9, 2011 (UTC)
Keep up the good work. Looks good so far. --Gengar orange 22x22Beware the sneaky smile! Fandyllic (talk · contr) 8 Jul 2011 10:35 PM Pacific
