I've had intermittent occasions of being blocked from editing for spurious reasons. The blocks in question seem to be "local internet addresses" in the 10.8.xxx.xxx block. I wrote to Wikia community support asking about the problem. Here is their reply:
Hi. We are very aware of this issue, as its affecting all of Wikia, and thus, we're getting many reports on it.
One of the proxy servers is not correctly passing the original IP as it transitions through the network. At some point, the internal IP got associated with the User, and when they were blocked, a temp auto-block was placed on all recent IPs, which, sadly included that internal one.
Any additional users that also hit this affected server, and get edits marked as this IP, get accidentally blocked, because MediaWiki thinks they are the same person.
We are working on isolating the problem server, and fixing the cause.
I expect that a corollary of the issue MIGHT be that attempting to block an IP (vs a user ID) may fail if the IP registered to be blocked is such a 10.8.x.x address. --Eirik Ratcatcher (talk) 19:32, May 20, 2010 (UTC)
