Forums: Village pump → Why Is "The" Being Left Out?

I've been noticing something lately. Pretty much every time an area has "The" before it in-game, the "The" is being left out in WoWWiki. The game places it in there because it is a part of its name. A few examples are below.

Dead Scar
Royal Exchange
Bazaar
Molten Span
Barrens
Park
Blue Recluse
Slaughtered Lamb

If this is what we're aiming for for some odd reason (I certainly hope not, as it is incorrect), I would like to point out that The Shepherd's Gate and The Canals currently have a "The" in their article name here. -- IconSmall BloodElf Male2IconSmall Rogue Sebreth (talk) 05:51, December 16, 2009 (UTC)

"There is an important exception to this rule: "the", "a" or "an" is included when it would be capitalized if it appeared in text. This applies to, quest articles, titles of books, games, and similar works."

The game uses these locations with a "The" in the name, including in quest dialogue and whatnot. I'd cite, but I can't remember the specific names of any of these quests. -- IconSmall BloodElf Male2IconSmall Rogue Sebreth (talk) 06:00, December 16, 2009 (UTC)
Locations are not an exception to the rule. The Canals is in Stormwind, while Canals is in Undercity. That is an exception to the rule, when another zone absent of the the is used. Not sure why The Shepherd's Gate was recreated under that name, after it had been moved before. SnakeSssssssssssssssssssssssss Coobra sig3For Pony! (Sssss/Slithered) 06:59, December 16, 2009 (UTC)
NOA does not state that locations are not an exception when it would otherwise be an exception. Also, Canals (Stormwind) and Canals (Undercity) would work. -- IconSmall BloodElf Male2IconSmall Rogue Sebreth (talk) 07:11, December 16, 2009 (UTC)
I'm confused now... are you fighting for the use of using The or making disambig pages like what you suggested with Canals now? Why would the NOA mention it as an exception... it's not an exception, so if its not an exception it won't be mentioned. WW:DA can answer your questions on that. I'm rooting for the usage of "The". If this isn't possible, I think we should use disambiguation pages to keep everything the same. Also, to me the NOA article says something like, "If the article in question has "The" capitalized in game, etc., it's an exception to the rule." -- IconSmall BloodElf Male2IconSmall Rogue Sebreth (talk) 07:27, December 16, 2009 (UTC)
I'd point out that the exception (by my reading) is if the "The" is capitalized in the middle of a sentence or phrase, not in (for example) the mini-map. Take Blue Recluse: the quest is Quest:Investigate the Blue Recluse, and has the text "A disturbance has been reported at the Blue Recluse tavern ...". Since it's not capitalized, it's not an exception (under current policy). -- Harveydrone 00:44, December 19, 2009 (UTC)

There is a vote about this issue going on. Also, I am against using "The" as a disambiguation.--SWM2448 20:08, December 16, 2009 (UTC)

... and opinion (or at least voting) is split exactly evenly on the issue. I agree with SWM, though, that using "The" for disambiguation is weak. However, both pages have in-line disambiguation, so no great harm is done by leaving it as-is. --Eirik Ratcatcher (talk) 21:53, December 17, 2009 (UTC)
