Frost vrykul are a variant of vrykul. A fraction of their number (notably the residents of Valkyrion) serve the Lich King. Brunnhildar Village is home to a faction of female frost vrykul who retain their ancestral loyalty to Thorim.

Female vrykul may ascend to the status of hyldnir by completing the Hyldsmeet. It is unknown what happens to those that fail. Hyldnir that elect to serve the Lich King may go to Valkyrion where, those that are judged worthy by the Lich King, become val'kyr. Male vrykul may travel to Jotunheim and battle at Valhalas. The winners of this competition are taken to Ymirheim and become ymirjar. The losers become vargul.

Unlike many of the Lich King's minions, the frost vrykul seem to retain their intelligence and free will, serving their master of their own volition in the hopes of gaining the Lich King's favor and being turned into val'kyr or another higher order undead. Frost vrykul who fail to gain the Lich King's favor are turned into vargul, a more standard form of undead.

Though the ymirjar seem to serve the Lich King exclusively, the hyldnir serve Thorim and believe those who travel to Valkyrion are traitors.

Populations

Three major populations of frost vrykul are known to exist:

Brunnhildar Village

This entirely female population, located in the eastern area of the Storm Peaks, retains their ancestral loyalty to Thorim. The Scourge serving normal (male) vrykul are enslaved in their mines.

Members of this population compete against each other in the Hyldsmeet, the winner of which is entitled to an audience with Thorim. They are particularly adversarial towards the frost vrykul of Valkyrion, whom they consider traitors for allying with the Lich King.

Valkyrion

This entirely female population, located in the western area of the Storm Peaks, is loyal to the Lich King. They hope to "accept the Lich King's gift" and be transformed into val'kyr. Also present in the village is a breeding area for Plagued Proto-Dragons.

Ymirheim

Located in central Icecrown, Ymirheim is populated by both male and female frost vrykul. This population, called the ymirjar, is allied with the Lich King.
