The Army of Anaithnid was founded in 2006 by members of the Anaithnid sketch comedy troupe and their real-life friends, based mostly out of California. The current guild master is Onwee, a dwarf paladin. The prerequisite for joining AA is that you either know someone in AA (or the Anaithnid troupe) in real life, or have run with them and received good notation from them.
AA is described as a "quasi-guild", meaning that if you were a member of AA who wished to move on to other things (i.e. raiding guilds), you would still be considered "part of the guild". The fledgling raiding guild "My Other Mount is Thrall" is technically considered "part" of AA, as it was founded by Onwee's real-life brother and other "breakaways" from AA, and they still run with members of the original guild.
