Website[1]
The Gathering Darkness is a Guild on the Aerie Peak server dedicated to the advancement of the Warlock class, and revelling in our unmitigated power. The vast majority of the members of the Gathering Darkness are Undead, though there is a little room for other races (see below). The Gathering Darkness can be thought of as a Warlock Academy - the older (higher level) Warlocks pass on their knowledge and unwanted, non-soulbound treasure finds to the younger, less experienced Warlocks. Guildmembers help each other with Warlock quests, and often congregate to do an instance with an all-warlock party. You haven't lived until you've done an instance with 5 Warlocks. So many minions, so many curses, so much fire...
Recently, we have been accepting any Undead Spellcasters. The true might of the Undead cannot be fully experienced without the help of Mages and Priests, each of which are undeniably useful in their own unique way. Warlocks, however powerful they are, do not have the health or armor to sustain damage with out healing; Nor do they have the quick power to dispose of unwanted foes in the form of sheep; So the mighty warlocks call upon their other powerful friends within the Forsaken to aide them, and to purge the world of Alliance!
The Gathering Darkness is very flexible. It is not necessarily a Guild that demands service from it's members. We understand a player's need to divest him or herself of social constructs from time to time. And some players just like to be left alone. The Gathering Darkness will support players who ask, and promote players who show their desire to move up through the ranks. But there are no negative consequences for not contributing to the guild at all. When you contribute, it is returned threefold, when you do nothing, nothing happens.
Ranking Structure
Supplicant
All new members to the Gathering Darkness begin their studies as Supplicants.
Initiate
After a Supplicant reaches level 10, they may make a bid for the rank of Initiate. This is done by demonstrating one's ability to summon a Voidwalker, and donating a useful magic item to the guild.
Dark One
To become a Dark One, and to firmly ensconce yourself as a member of the guild, an Initiate must pass a series of simple tests:
- Recruit Two (2) new Supplicants.
- Donate 20
to the guild.
- Purchase the guild tabard.
- Run a Dungeon or Instance with a member at least Soul Flayer in rank.
Soul Flayer
The Soul Flayers make up the first level of Officer ranks. This is the first rank that is trusted with the ability to recruit new Supplicants on their own, meaning that they will not have to find a higher-ranking member of the Gathering Darkness to recruit. Soul Flayers must demonstrate a decent understanding of the guild and it's needs, and as such promotion to this rank is handled on a case-by-case basis. Here are some general guidelines:
- A Dark One that is able to provide a unique and useful service to the guild will often receive this promotion on the basis of that service alone. Some examples of these services:
- A tailor that has found the much-sought after pattern for Arcane Robes needed for Bloodrobe Warlock quest.
- Creation and and maintaining our website.
- A Soul Flayer should be able to conjur a Succubus.
- Regularly brings in recruits and actively promotes the guild.
- Provides aid to those of lower ranks.
- Adventures with guildmembers of Soul Flayer or higher rank. This is so the higher ranked officers can see the candidate in action, monitor how the candidate represents the guild, and ensure that each Soul Flayer will be a member in good standing.
- Agrees to learn a Trade Skill that has no direct benefit, but provides sought-after reagents for the rest of the guild. Examples include:
- Blacksmithing
- Skinning
- Engineering
- In Summary, those ranked Soul Flayer and above have taken their enrollment in the guild a step further, and have shown that they want to contribute to the guild and make it even better.
Shadow Brood
The Shadow Brood are the upper ranks of the Gathering Darkness. There can only be 13 Shadow Brood at any given time, and to achieve this rank requires toil and sacrifice on the guilds' behalf. To become a Shadow Brood, a Soul Flayer must:
- Summon a Felhunter
- Select a Chosen One to become his or her Hand of Sorrow.
- Organize and host a Rite of Ascension.
- Defeat a current Shadow Brood for his or her seat (if 13 Shadow Brood are already active)
Rite of Ascension
The Rite of Ascension is a special Ceremony that is only performed when a Soul Flayer is ready to assume the rank of Shadow Brood. It is a special time, and the guild gathers to honor the Soul Flayer in question, as well as to receive his or her tithe. Rites are commonly associated with much head-banging and multiple uses of Rain of Fire.
In order for a Soul Flayer to become a Shadow Brood, they must have selected a Chosen One. In brief, a Chosen One acts as a lieutenant and right-hand man (or woman) to the Soul Flayer, and can be of any class or race (note that only Chosen Ones and Hands of Sorrow can be anything other than Undead Warlocks). The Soul Flayer must have found and/or purchased an appropriate Gift to honor their Chosen One at the Rite - a Gift that is highly desired by the Chosen One they serve with. The Gift is a reflection of how much honor the Soul Flayer carries, and is itself a symbol of honor and prestige amongst the guild (like a king's crown or sceptre). This Gift is presented to the Soul Flayer's Chosen One at the Rite of Ascension.
The second part of the Rite of Ascension, after the Gifting, is the Tithe. The host of the Rite pays a tithe of 50 silver (50
) to every guildmember present as a show of fealty to the guild. These funds are used to strengthen the guild as a whole.
After the Gifting and the Tithing, the only matter to attend to is the Displacement, if necessary. As there can only be 13 Shadow Brood, if the roster of Shadow Brood is currently full then the aspiring Soul Flayer must choose one with which to duel (no minions). Only after the Gifting and the Tithing can the Displacement take place, and if the Soul Flayer is unsuccessful then he or she will not ascend to the rank of Shadow Brood.
If the Soul Flayer is victorious in the Displacement, then he or she assumes the rank of Shadow Brood.
After much Revelry, the guild usually performs a raid to celebrate. These raids are usually fruitless and end in pointless death and carnage, much to the delight of all.
Special Ranks
Shadow Council
Special members of the guild are selected as members of the Shadow Council. The council are special advisors to the Duke of Despair, and are the only other guild members with the power to promote and demote other guildmembers. The Shadow Council act as the guildmaster in the event that the guildmaster is not to be found...
Chosen Ones
The Chosen Ones are specially selected companions to the Soul Flayers. Each Soul Flayer may select a single Chosen One, but this Chosen can be of any race or class. When a Soul Flayer makes a bid for the Shadow Brood, the Chosen One associated with that Soul Flayer is then in line to become a Hand of Sorrow.
Hand of Sorrow
A Hand of Sorrow is a high-ranking position of honor that can only be held by a previous Chosen One. The Hand of Sorrow can select up to 5 other non-warlock members to act as his or her Forlorn.
Forlorn
The agents of the Hand of Sorrow. The Forlorn can be of any race and class, and though considered outcasts from their respective cultures for their close association to the Undead, their position within the Gathering Darkness is one of reverence, fear, and honor...
Shadow Council
Special members of the guild are selected as members of the Shadow Council. The council are special advisors to the Duke of Despair, and are the only other guild members with the power to promote and demote other guildmembers. The Shadow Council act as the guildmaster in the event that the guildmaster is not to be found
Avicenna's Potions and Herbs
Guild members are able to send a message to member Avicenna when they are in need of potions. Remember that when you order a potion, you must order it in advance. Avicenna does not always have the herbs or materials needed to make the potion, and you must give at least 1 day for him to get them. If you supply the necessary vial, you will get a discount. Tips are appreciated.
