Based on his name and general attitude when speaking to players, it is likely that Gunny is based on former Marine R. Lee Ermey, particularly his role as Gunnery Sergeant Hartman in Full Metal Jacket. His What is your major malfunction? is most likely a reference to the Stacraft Terran Siege Tank Pilot's speech.
