Holy Shield is a Paladin spell that increases chance to block and causes blocked attacks to reflect holy damage with increased threat. The spell is primarily used by tanking paladins in order to increase threat generation and increase chance to block. To this extent the spell has become one of the core abilities for any Paladin who desires to tank.

Notes

The block chance increase from Holy Shield stacks with the increase from Redoubt. Both buffs combined equal a 60% increased block chance.

Holy Shield adds 5% of your +Spell Damage on each successful block.

Talent improvement

The Improved Holy Shield talent can increase the damage caused by Holy Shield and, when maxed, doubles the amount of charges the spell has.

Tips and tactics

Holy Shield is often used in combination with other damage reflection abilities, such as Retribution Aura, to cause large amounts of damage to attackers. See Paladin Tactics for more information.

When fully talented Holy Shield will have eight charges. This is enough to allow a Paladin to block every attack from all but the fastest attacking mobs. This significantly helps in avoiding crushing blows in situations where a warrior may not be able to block all incoming attacks. Sometimes when the tankadin has enough threat lead over DPS, lower ranked HS is used to save mana while still maintaining increased block rate.

Libram of Repentance is an epic relic for paladins that increases block rating by 42 (5.3%) while Holy Shield is active.
