An in-game purchase is buying something for real money from Blizzard while playing one of their games. World of Warcraft introduced an in-game shop in Patch 5.4.2. Diablo III had this before any Warcraft games via the real-money auction house, but that feature was removed.

Real money purchases on PTR Edit

In response to the discovery of a data-mined spell ([Enduring Elixir of Wisdom]ω ϖ; NYR) and item ([Enduring Elixir of Wisdom]ω ϖ; NYR) from a Patch 5.4 PTR build, Zarhym suggested in blue post on the official forums that real money purchasing in-game for certain regions was being explored for testing on the PTR.[1] This post was reported later by the BBC.

Bashiok followed up a few days later with more specifics, mentioning an "in-game store" and likely introduction in Asia-only.[2]

In Patch 5.4.2 Edit

The test version of the in-game shop that appeared with Patch 5.4.2 on the PTR allowed purchasing with test currency and did not appear to indicate an Asia-only introduction. It was released when the same patch went live on December 10, 2013.
