- Were you looking for the type of armor augments known as Inscriptions or the class lore from the RPG Inscriber?
Inscription is a profession which will be introduced in the upcoming Wrath of the Lich King expansion. Inscription will allow players to augment the cooldown, damage, or mechanics (stun, knockback, DoT, HoT, etc.) of a spell. It will have two aspects: augmentation of abilities and spells with the creation of a new type of item ("scrolls", for example, from ink, paper, and other reagents — or some other item which has not yet been revealed).[1] Every player will get a new spell book page to which they can add six glyphs — currently, two major, two lesser, and two minor.[2]
A sub-skill called [Milling][3] will accompany Inscription that will produce reagents from herbs similar to how the [Prospecting] sub-skill of Jewelcrafting works.
Inscribing abilities for other characters will involve the creation of Inscription Scrolls which can be traded, bought, or sold at the auction house in the same manner as other items.[4]
Inscribers will also be able to create scrolls for enchanters to put their enchants on, this will enable enchanting scrolls to be traded, and sold on the auction house.[5]
Those who don't purchase the expansion will be able to use items created by an inscriber, but only those players who purchase Wrath of the Lich King will be able to learn Inscription as a profession.
Official examples
- Inscribers will create Glyphs that allow players to modify their spells and abilities.[6]
- [Backstab] could be enhanced to crit more often.
- [Shadow Bolt] could be enhanced to do additional damage.
- [Frost Nova] could have larger range or longer duration.
- [Fireball] could be enhanced to also cause a knockback effect.
- "Demonic Runes inscription that will increase fire damage done by the Mage [Fireball] spell by 50 additional points."[7]
- Major glyphs will be effective in combat — adding damage over time or stun to a physical attack, for example — while minor glyphs will give convenient or cosmetic improvements, removing the need for some spell reagents.[8]
Other Beta Examples:
- Glyph of the Penguin (Mage) (Minor Glyph) - Empowers a Minor Glyph to cause your Polymorph: Sheep spell to turn the target into a baby penguin.[9]
- Glyph of Wild Endurance (Druid) (Minor Glyph) - Empowers a Minor Glyph to increase the duration of your [Mark of the Wild] and [Gift of the Wild] spells by 30 min.[10]
- Glyph of Natural Force (Druid) (Greater Glyph) - Empowers a Greater Glyph to avoid interruption caused by damage while casting your [Wrath] spells by 50%.[11]
Gathering Profession
As of the βeta, Herbalism is the primary gathering profession for Inscription.
Notes
- Inscriptions require herbs as materials, and so it relies on the herbalism gathering profession.[12]
- Glyphs can be sold at the Auction House.[13]
- In the current βeta, if you can't get to Dalaran for Inscription supplies, the nearest other vendor is at Amber Ledge (see below) in Borean Tundra on Northrend's west side. You will recognize Amber Ledge because it has a large dragon flight master and a lone tower.
- For Horde, Amber Ledge is easily reachable north of Warsong Hold, if you have a mount and are around level 55 or more (lower and the aggro range and mobs probably will kill you). Just avoid the wolves and ride roughly northeast until you see a path winding up to Amber Ledge (keep looking at the world map briefly to make sure you're going the right direction).
- For Alliance, Amber Ledge is a much harder trek. You will also want to be mounted and around level 55 or more. You may die at least once. Follow the road northwest and make a right at the "T" northward. Continue north until you get to another "T" and make a left northwest (you might see the D.E.H.T.A. camp to your right before the "T"). Soon you will hit a "Y" and make a left. Keep following this road west up to Amber Ledge. This trip is about 3-4 times as long as the Horde trip.
Trainers
It is expected that the Inscription profession trainer will be found in the Alliance and Horde towns in Northrend.
Inscription will be trainable at low levels like other Professions.
In the current βeta, trainers are only in Northrend.
Vendors
In the current βeta, there are only two NPCs that sell Inscription supplies and one is difficult to reach (in Dalaran):
- Larana Drome <Inscription Supplies> in Dalaran
- Librarian Ingram <Inscription Supplies> in Amber Ledge, Borean Tundra near the top of the tower
