Ability poisons2020
  • Instant Poison
  • Classes: Rogue
  • Use: Coats a weapon with poison that lasts for 1 hour.
Each strike has a chance of poisoning the enemy which instantly inflicts X Nature damage.
"This may sting a bit..."

Instant Poison is the first damaging poison a rogue can use. Once applied to a weapon, each successful hit will have a chance to inflict 300+0.1*AP nature damage (at rank 9).

The chance of applying the poison is higher per strike with slow weapons (just like Inv misc herb 16 [Wound Poison], but unlike Ability rogue dualweild [Deadly Poison] which has a set 30% chance to be applied per strike). The times it is applied per minute is a lot lower than that of wound poison however (7 or so ppm against 20 ppm), meaning wound poison actually adds more damage per second than instant poison does when no points are put in Improved Poisons. After 4 points into this talent instant poison adds more dps.

All this means that you don't need a fast weapon for instant/deadly poison but you do need a fast weapon for deadly poison. Combat rogues will therefore want to use a slow main hand weapon (with wound poison) and a fast off hand (with deadly poison) to maximize their dps. Assassination rogues will generally want to use instant poison on their main hand instead.

Instant Poison and Ability poisonsting [Crippling Poison] are the first poisons a rogue may use and is bought from poison vendors at level 20. A quest to gain access to poisons is no longer required and the ability to make poisons yourself with a profession-like skill has been removed even longer ago. Additional ranks may be used at appropriate levels.

Instant Poison Ranks

Rank Level
Required
Damage
I 20 13-17
II 28 21-25
III 36 30-38
IV 44 45-57
V 52 62-80
VI 60 76-100
VII 68 161-215
VIII 73 245-327
IX 79 300-400

Every rank of Instant Poison does an additional 0.1 * AP damage.

Notes

  • Safe to use in any situation, as it has no CC-breaking DoTs.
  • Nature damage is not reduced by armor, so it is more effective against heavily armored opponents.
  • Shiv can be used to automatically apply the poison, effectively increasing flat damage of the attack. shiv however can never crit and neither can the poison it applies so it's use is in this way is limited.
  • Without at least 4 points in Ability poisons [Improved Poisons], Inv misc herb 16 [Wound Poison] (because of its higher proc per minute rate) does more dps than instant poison. It should be noted that even without the talent instant poison scales better than wound poison as it gains more extra damage per point of attack power. However, the amount of attack power you would need to beat wound poison is extremely high.
