Iron is a metal that can be mined. Iron deposits can also produce gems and Heavy Stone. Iron ore can be smelted into bars at the forge. Iron bars are also a component to steel alloy. Alchemists with the right recipe can transmute iron into gold. In order to mine Iron veins you require a mining skill of at least 125.
