The Ironforge clan was apparently the original Dwarven clan that evolved from the Earthen. At some point it split into the three main clans that once inhabited Ironforge. Including the Bronzebeard Clan (ruling clan of the Ironforge Clan), the Wildhammer Clan, and the Dark Iron Clan. Ironforge Clan is one of the clans of "mountain dwarves". It was ruled by High King Modimus Anvilmar, and later Madoran Bronzebeard.

The Ironforge Clan ruled peacefully until the death of Modimus Anvilmar, about 300 years ago, when the Bronzebeard Clan, Wildhammer Clan, and Dark Iron Clan grew divided. The Wildhammers wanted to open up trade and negotiations with high elves, which at the time was considered taboo. They also wanted more positions within the city of Ironforge. Dark Irons practiced arcane sorcery, a black art that threatened to bring destruction upon the dwarven people.

Clan Ironforge would not tolerate these indiscretions, and after a short fierce battle, exiled the other two clans. Some from the Ironforge Clan left to join the other two clans and changed their names, such as Rumholt Thunderaxe's two cousins who joined the Dark Iron Clan, becoming known as the "Pikesplitters".

When the Dark Iron clan turned on the other two dwarven factions, Clan Ironforge, represented mainly by the Bronzebeard Clan, joined with Clan Wildhammer to prevent and repel the assault. They were able to drive the Dark Iron clan back into the Redridge mountains. Much of all three clans armies were destroyed when Dark Irons released Ragnaros.LoC 67, 131, 191
