An Archaeology Fragment is an artifact (not to be confused with Artifact, an item quality) gathered by using the Inv misc shovel 01 [Survey] ability of the Archaeology profession.

These are not represented by inventory items. They only appear as a number on the respective page of a player's archaeology dialog, in a fashion similar to currency.

There are several different types of fragment. Each fragment type is used to piece together ('solve') archaeology finds of that type. Fragments may be collected beyond what is needed to solve the current project. They are not destroyed and carry over to any number of subsequent projects.
