Lordaeron (aka Lordaeron Empire) is a former human kingdom of the Eastern Kingdoms. Its name comes from the three main Alliance race languages: "lorn" (in Dwarven) that means "land", "daer" (in Common) that means "people" and "ronae" (in Thalassian) that means peaceful. Lordaeron's Capital City is also called Lordaeron. Originally one of the Seven Kingdoms to emerge during the collapse of Arathor, Lordaeron was ruled by the House of Menethil and provided refuge for the people of Stormwind following that kingdom's destruction at the end of the First War. During the Second War, Lordaeron spearheaded the first Alliance's campaign against the Orcish Horde, but was almost entirely consumed by the Scourge during the Third War. This former nation's territory is now contested between the Scourge, the Forsaken, and fragmented pockets of human resistance, most notably the Scarlet Crusade and the Argent Dawn.

Humans - traits
While humans have not wielded arcane magic for as long as high elves, they have a strong tradition of it. When high elf magi brought the secrets of arcane magic to humans, the younger race showed a natural predilection for it. Human mastery of arcane energy was instrumental in vanquishing the ancient troll empire that threatened human and high elf civilization. Humans and high elves recognized the danger arcane magic posed, and so created the Guardians of Tirisfal — powerful arcane casters who guarded against demonic invasion. Since that time, human ability with the arcane has continued and evolved; humans established the Kirin Tor, a council of archmagi who ruled Dalaran, an arcane city. Even with the destruction wrought in the Third War, humans remain consummate magi, eager to use flame and ice to scour their enemies. Many human magi are creative, creating spectacular new spells or new ways to use existing spells. The iconic human mage, however, is a powerhouse of arcane energy. She summons creatures to her aid while pounding her foes with blasts of fire or rains of slashing ice.APG

City-state of Arathor
Most of the remaining mages are human. This is mostly due to the fact that Dalaran was essentially a human nation, and naturally it culled a great majority of its members from humanity. Humans are also the most populous out of all races who study the arcane arts.

  +

  +
Lordaeron was settled by the disenfranchised lords of Strom, capital of the nation of Arathor, who were part of a group that left Strom because they were desirous of the verdant lands to the north. The capital city served as a spiritual destination for the citizens of the seven human kingdoms.

  +
Lordaeron in Warcraft II
When the quel'dorei trained the first batch of one hundred humans in the most rudimentary of arcana, they were surprised to find the young race had great natural affinity. The sheer, raw power they could summon up even surpassed what high elven casters were capable of mustering, but they lacked control. This trait became what forever characterized the typical style and approach of human mages. Most human mages prefer using fire and arcane spells, as they allow for the caster to dish out salvos of raging energy, which become bigger, powerful and more varied streams as the mage gains experience. However, humans still find it difficult to concentrate and focus their attacks for more precise and subtle effects. For example, while a human mage might find incinerating a cadre of gnolls child's play, lighting the tip of a candle or precisely bombarding a target without harming those around the target may be difficult.

The Alliance of Lordaeron
*Diplomacy is a useful bonus for all classes, especially at higher levels where reputation becomes more important for collecting gear. The spirit bonus means you'll recharge your mana pool (and health) at a slightly faster rate then similarly equipped mages. Perception is also useful for spotting lurking creeps with stealth or an enemy rogue. As low health casters, mages are often early targets of sneaky types.

  +
Following the opening of the Dark Portal, the nations of Azeroth and Khaz Modan were conquered by the Horde. The refugees from Azeroth, led by Lord Anduin Lothar, fled across the sea to Lordaeron. There, Lothar convinced the leaders of the human nations, as well as the dwarves of Ironforge, gnomes of Gnomeregan, and high elves of Quel'Thalas, to join forces in the Alliance of Lordaeron.
*The human bonus to mace and sword skills are useless. You can't use maces, and swords are only equipped for their stats. If you're out of mana, you will be using your wand.

*With the release of Wrath of the Lich King, humans have received a new racial bonus called Every Man for Himself that removes all movement impairing effects. This can be helpful for a mage who has their Blink on cooldown and needs to make a fast escape. The ability shares a cooldown with similar effects (i.e. Insignia of the Alliance) but has a much shorter recharge time and frees up a trinket slot for other uses.

  +
Under the leadership of King Terenas Menethil II and Lord Lothar, the Alliance was victorious, pushing the Horde back to the Dark Portal, and destroying the gateway to the orcs' homeworld. Lothar fell in the assault on Blackrock Spire, and with the loss of his political skill, rifts developed between the Alliance nations. The main issue of dispute was a tax levied by King Terenas to finance the internment of the orcs. Though Lordaeron attempted to retain its central role, several nations pulled their support from the Alliance.
Gnomes - traits
In a community as eccentric as mages, for other mages to regard gnomish mages as outlandish is really a statement. Gnome mages are characterized by their bizarre and bold (some would say 'whimsically suicidal') probing into just how many things they can get their spells to do. The insatiable curiosity of gnomes is legendary, and all gnomes of all walks of life tinker. Gnomes as a race hold no general preference for any particular tree of magic or school of thought, but all are highly individualistic, and their idiosyncratic spells are evidence. Gnomes have the most creative spell repertoire of all the practicing races by far, and home-made gnomish spells either end up as fabulous successes or extremely dangerous failures.

*Gnomes are generally well-suited to caster classes, with a 5% bonus to Intellect. Also useful is the Escape Artist ability, which is invaluable when the low-hitpoint mage needs to get away from creeps or players with movement-hampering abilities. They also have a minor 10 point bonus to Arcane Resistance.

*The bonus to engineering is nice if you want to explore the strange devices produced by engineering, however explosives (a large subset of engineering recipes) are of dubious use to a mage with a full spell arsenal. There are plenty of other interesting things, however, and there is no shortage of gnomish mage engineers.

The Scourge of Lordaeron
Draenei - traits
  +
Following years of debate over the internment of the orcs, a plague appeared in the north of Lordaeron. As it spread throughout the towns and cities of Lordaeron, one after another fell to the Scourge, most notably Andorhal and Stratholme. Finally, with the corruption of the heir to the throne of Lordaeron, Prince Arthas Menethil, the capital city itself succumbed. Arthas' captains Falric and Marwyn alone were responsible for the slaughter of the aristocracy. Thus, in an ironic twist of fate, it was Lordaeron that lay in ruins, with refugees streaming to Khaz Modan and Azeroth.
Draenei have always been natural magic users. When aboard the Exodar for long journeys the draenei had plenty of hours to study and practice magic. They are one of the oldest races in the universe and therefore have had a lot of time to research and improve their knowledge of the arcane arts. Since they have had so much knowledge passed down and live such long lives to practice it, the draenei are among the most powerful mages in the known universe.

  +
Arthas briefly assumed the title of King, and ruled as an agent of the Scourge, before the eruption of a civil war between his forces, the remaining dreadlords, and the free undead led by Sylvanas Windrunner. Windrunner's forces, the Forsaken, achieved a victory over the dreadlords and Scourge, claiming the ruined former capital of Lordaeron (the "Ruins of Lordaeron"), under which they constructed the Undercity.
*The Gift of the Naaru gives a heal ability every 3 minutes that scales with level: It can be useful in a tight corner.

*Draenei magi receive the very useful Heroic Presence which increases chance to hit with spells by 1% for both you and all party members within 30 yards.

*The 2% chance to dodge in the Shadow school of magic makes harder to hit when fighing Shadow Priest and Warlocks. This is also useful for end game raids and basic grinding against Shadow wielding mobs.

*The 5 point skill bonus to Jewelcrafting is of minor interest.

Modern Lordaeron
Horde Icon Horde
  +
The remaining indigenous humans of Lordaeron may be broken down into three major groups, the Loyalists of Stormwind, the Scarlet Crusade and the Argent Dawn. The first are the folk of southern Lordaeron which have remained loyal to the Alliance, and have given their loyalty to the monarchy at Stormwind. These humans once controlled three towns, scattered evenly across the southern regions of the nation. Southshore was the most important of these townships, and the only port north of the Thandol Span under Alliance control. To the north, nestled in the rolling foothills of Alterac lay the town of Hillsbrad, surrounded by the rich Hillsbrad Fields. The town controlled an important mine on the coast, Azurelode Mine. Far to the west of these towns lies the town of Pyrewood Village, which received its aid not from Stormwind, but from Dalaran. The town was friendly to the Alliance, but the dire curse laid upon it by the mage Arugal prevented it from further integration. To the south of the town lay a refugee camp outside of the Greymane Wall, and its folk also supported the Alliance.
Trolls - traits
Many may wonder how a race performing primitive rituals based around a spiritual religion could wield the arts of the arcane. Yet the recent alliance between the Darkspear Tribe and the Horde showed that the trolls are quite a perceptive race, willing to learn new ways if it is for the best of the tribe, much like the humans back in their primitive days.

  +
The Scarlet Crusade held lands scattered throughout northern Lordaeron, and at one stage were by far the most numerically well endowed of the human factions of the former kingdom. Nominally a part of the Alliance, they are so fearful of the undead that they will attack any individual on sight. They hold several key positions in the Tirisfal Glades, including farmlands in the west, and their great stronghold in the region, the Scarlet Monastery above the north coast. In the Western Plaguelands they once controlled the entire northern part of the zone from Hearthglen. They also formerly maintained a presence in Andorhal. In the Eastern Plaguelands they controlled Tyr's Hand, and nominally controlled the Scarlet Enclave beyond, although it has become depopulated due to invasion by the Scourge, and migration to Northrend. Their capital lay at Stratholme, where they held a portion of the city.
The arcane arts were once exclusively elven and human, governed by the mages of Quel'thalas and the Kirin Tor of Dalaran. However, the fall of these organizations during the Third War resulted in many scattered mages across Azeroth searching for a place to settle. It is not unlikely that the trolls might have adapted their arcane knowledge from these scavengers, as well as from their recent allies, the Forsaken, who still possess knowledge of the arcane arts in undeath.

  +
The Argent Dawn has bases throughout the Plaguelands, and is made up of those humans who have taken a more moderate approach to the war against the dead, accepting Horde and even Forsaken into their ranks.
*Troll abilities (with the exception of the two ranged weapon bonuses) each have their own upside and downside for a mage. Trolls gain a +1% chance to critically strike with Bows and Throwing weapons, but since mages are unable to actually use either of these types of weapons, they are useless.

  +
The Alliance has further strength in the region as well. A small high elven outpost could also be found near the bounds of the Ghostlands in the Eastern Plaguelands, Quel'Lithien Lodge. These elves stayed committed to the Alliance, and were hostile to the Horde. Dalaranian troops also have a presence in southern Silverpine Forest.

  +
The Forsaken managed to take control of the heart of the old kingdom, claiming the Ruins of Lordaeron (and the Undercity beneath) as their base of operations. They use it to keep hold over much of the Tirisfal Glades, and control the towns Brill and Deathknell along the main east-west road of the region. They also control The Sepulcher in the center of Silverpine Forest, and the town of Tarren Mill in the Hillsbrad Foothills.
*The troll regeneration ability increases health regenerated by 10% and allows 10% of said regeneration to continue while in combat. This means less time spent eating for the mage, but since mages can conjure free food and have their downtime stretched by mana, not health, this seems like a weak bonus at best. However, since they retain some health regeneration in combat, troll mages can take a hit or two more than other mages before keeling over.

  +
The Syndicate, in an attempt to punish Lordaeron for its role in the fall of their kingdom of Alterac took the fortress of Durnholde Keep and the surrounding countryside, although the Ravenholdt (a league of assassins) have attempted to curb their strength from their base at Ravenholdt Manor (which also lies in former Lordaeron).
*Trolls have an ability called Berserking. This ability increases attack and casting speed by a flat 20%. While commonly over looked, this can take off nearly a half second on spells that take two seconds to cast, and also shortens the time you're vulnerable while channeling spells such as Arcane Missile and Blizzard.

  +
Finally, the Undead Scourge holds Stratholme and Andorhal, as well as Scholomance in the southern Western Plaguelands. The Scourge at one point were overwhelmingly the dominate force in much of Lordaeron, with a presence in all its zones except the Hillsbrad Foothills.
*Trolls also gain a +5% bonus to damage done against beasts. This works the same as it does for any other class, increasing damage done against beasts by 5%, no matter the source. A very good racial passive for grinding.

  +
On a side note, the mage Arugal formerly controlled large tracts of land in Silverpine Forest from Shadowfang Keep.
*Since the release of Wrath, trolls have received a new racial bonus Da Voodoo Shuffle, reducing movement impairing effects by 15%. This can be helpful for a mage who has their Blink on cooldown and needs to make a fast escape.

Forsaken magi are mostly fallen former human magi; they might as well be affected by their proximity to Dalaran, ancient minions of Archimonde who could roam the ruins of the fallen city and understand the complex science of magic.<br />

  +
Cataclysm
As all their un-life is affected by the cold of their bodies, many Forsaken mages are starting to share the virtues of high elves (because they, too, have a long lifespan), using the frost school for the same reasons. A Forsaken mage has the willpower only a man that has abandoned all hope may have.

  +
The Kingdom of Lordaeron's former territories have seen major power shifts as of the Cataclysm.

  +
* With the defeat of the Lich King, his influence is fading from the Western Plaguelands, and the Cenarion Circle and Argent Crusade seek to cleanse the region of any lingering Scourge taint.
*Underwater Breathing and Shadow Resistance have obvious value, especially with quests that bring you to the bottom of a lake, or when fighting priests or warlocks or a mob who has shadow attacks.

  +
* The Alliance and Horde have moved in to Andorhal to eliminate the remaining Scourge presence, only to tussle for control of the town.
  +
* The Forsaken have consolidated their power, seizing control of Hillsbrad and plague-bombing Southshore, forcing any survivors into hiding. Warchief Garrosh has ordered the Forsaken to invade the newly opened-up kingdom of Gilneas for a naval base.
  +
* The Scarlet Crusade has fallen into decline, having been routed by death knights at the Scarlet Enclave, left leaderless by adventurers in Northrend, and exposed as a puppet of Burning Legion dreadlords. They have completely lost the Western Plaguelands to the Argent Crusade. The remaining Crusaders in Stratholme and Tyr's Hand have ironically been turned into the undead Risen by the aforementioned dreadlords, leaving the Tirisfal Glades as the last major bastion of Scarlet presence.
  +
* The Syndicate have lost Durnholde Keep to the Forsaken, and no longer have a presence in the Alterac Uplands.
  +
* The Argent Crusade is now the dominant force in the Eastern Plaguelands, and Tirion Fordring, fresh from his victory over the Lich King, has retaken his old domain of Hearthglen.
  +
* The hermit kingdom of Gilneas has been opened up by the Cataclysm's shattering of the Greymane Wall. The subsequent invasion by the Forsaken has led King Genn Greymane to rejoin the Alliance. Worgen packs are locked in combat with Forsaken forces in Silverpine Forest.
  +
* With Arugal deceased in lore, Shadowfang Keep is now occupied by Gilnean traitor Lord Godfrey and his henchmen.
  +
* With the loss of Hillsbrad and Southshore, Aerie Peak, Chillwind Camp, and the Arathi Highlands are now the strongest Alliance presences in the Lordaeron region. Stormpike troops have also gathered south of the Alterac Mountains.
  +
* Dalaran, having rebuilt, teleported to Northrend to aid in the fight against the Lich King and Malygos. Even after the Lich King's defeat, it is keeping vigil in Northrend for the foreseeable future.

  +

*The Will of the Forsaken ability will break any fear, sleep or charm effects on you, and make you immune for the next 5 seconds, during which time whoever cast the effect on you will probably try to re-cast it, buying you time to peel off a sheep spell and give them a taste of their own medicine. Since a magi capacity for damage and their ability to shake off pursuit makes them prime targets for such crowd control spells, this is a useful ability, even considered overpowering by some.

The Capital City of Lordaeron once controlled the Eastern Plaguelands, the Western Plaguelands, the Tirisfal Glades, the Hillsbrad Foothills, most of Silverpine Forest, and part of the Alterac Mountains (Chillwind Point, and the town of Strahnbrad).

Due to the fact that blood elves are former high elves, they are master mages. In fact, they are the most magical race among the Horde. The main difference between a blood elf mage and their high elven cousins is in their preference of spells. While most high elves choose the frost school, blood elves instead practice fire magics. Also due to being former high elves, many blood elven mages have been studying magic for many years, so much so it is part of their very culture.

High elves are the most arcane-imbued race in the Alliance (At least, when enough of them still existed to make a difference). Many credit them with discovering arcane magic, and it is a matter of historical record that high elves taught arcane magic to humans many thousands of years ago. High elf magi are unparalleled masters of the craft. They usually focus their efforts on shaping and changing their spells and expanding their repertoires; they do not let the distractions of familiars, of summoning elementals, or of excessive focus on fire and ice distract them from their chosen path. The iconic high elf mage is a dark and haughty individual, claiming knowledge of arcane secrets that never fell into human hands.APG

Elven mages tend to have more control over magic than other races. Magic is not just a craft to them, it is the way of life. Having an long lifespan affords several advantages, including plenty of time to study, hone and discover all manner of spells and different ways of applying them. As a result elves are extremely flexible casters, and can handle themselves in all manner of situations. The long-lived casters are also famed for their concentration, precision and control. Because of this, many high elves prefer using frost spells, which rewards accuracy and timing. Frost spells are also highly flexible, being equally useful defensively and offensively, manifesting in various forms such as attacks, armors and cages. Blood elves, upon their self-proclaimed rebirth as a new race, have since embraced fire as their mainstay tree of study.

Because of the aforementioned ability to experiment and tweak their spells throughout their long lifetimes, high elves are much more knowledgeable of magic than mages of other races, and often possess exclusive knowledge on secret and obscure arcana - sometimes, even forbidden and dangerous. They take no humility in constantly reminding other races of this fact.

Naga mage
Siren

The naga are powerful arcane spellcasters. Night elves invented the art, after all, and the naga have had 10,000 years to refine it. Indeed, one of the greatest mortal mage ever to live is the naga's queen, Azshara, who still lives. In fact, she may no longer be mortal.

Naga women are their race’s spellcasters, and over the millennia they have developed a number of talents and techniques related to their art. Through intense study they learn to expand their repertoires to include other, unrelated spells. Their spells strike with the fury of the sea, whipping and crushing their opponents. Naga magi receive some military training as well.

The iconic naga mage is called a siren, and she slithers forward with her brethren, glaives clutched in two of her arms. The other two weave arcane energy, and she protects her allies and decimates her opponents with her spells. She is assured and arrogant, and with good reason.

This article is about the kingdom. For the continent, see Lordaeron.

Lordaeron (aka Lordaeron Empire[2]) is a former human kingdom of the Eastern Kingdoms. Its name comes from the three main Alliance race languages: "lorn" (in Dwarven) that means "land", "daer" (in Common) that means "people" and "ronae" (in Thalassian) that means peaceful.[3] Lordaeron's Capital City is also called Lordaeron.[4] Originally one of the Seven Kingdoms to emerge during the collapse of Arathor, Lordaeron was ruled by the House of Menethil and provided refuge for the people of Stormwind following that kingdom's destruction at the end of the First War. During the Second War, Lordaeron spearheaded the first Alliance's campaign against the Orcish Horde, but was almost entirely consumed by the Scourge during the Third War. This former nation's[5][6][7] territory is now contested between the Scourge, the Forsaken, and fragmented pockets of human resistance, most notably the Scarlet Crusade and the Argent Dawn.

Lordaeron was settled by the disenfranchised lords of Strom, capital of the nation of Arathor, who were part of a group that left Strom because they were desirous of the verdant lands to the north. The capital city served as a spiritual destination for the citizens of the seven human kingdoms.

 • Leader: King Terenas II
 • Nation Color: White
 • Background: Ruled by the benevolent King Terenas II, the nation of Lordaeron stands as the last bastion of hope for humanity. The armies of Lordaeron were the first to heed the call to arms issued by Sir Lothar and the people of Azeroth. As patron of the Alliance, King Terenas II has assumed the heavy mantle of leadership to protect all who abide in his domain. The armies of Lordaeron are deeply religious and are driven by the belief that humanity must stand steadfast against the blasphemous onslaught of the Horde.[8]

The Alliance of Lordaeron

Following the opening of the Dark Portal, the nations of Azeroth and Khaz Modan were conquered by the Horde. The refugees from Azeroth, led by Lord Anduin Lothar, fled across the sea to Lordaeron. There, Lothar convinced the leaders of the human nations, as well as the dwarves of Ironforge, gnomes of Gnomeregan, and high elves of Quel'Thalas, to join forces in the Alliance of Lordaeron.

The Scourge of Lordaeron

Following years of debate over the internment of the orcs, a plague appeared in the north of Lordaeron. As it spread throughout the towns and cities of Lordaeron, one after another fell to the Scourge, most notably Andorhal and Stratholme. Finally, with the corruption of the heir to the throne of Lordaeron, Prince Arthas Menethil, the capital city itself succumbed. Arthas' captains Falric and Marwyn alone were responsible for the slaughter of the aristocracy. Thus, in an ironic twist of fate, it was Lordaeron that lay in ruins, with refugees streaming to Khaz Modan and Azeroth.[9]

Modern Lordaeron

The Argent Dawn has bases throughout the Plaguelands, and is made up of those humans who have taken a more moderate approach to the war against the dead, accepting Horde and even Forsaken into their ranks.

On a side note, the mage Arugal formerly controlled large tracts of land in Silverpine Forest from Shadowfang Keep.

Cataclysm

Cataclysm This section concerns content related to Cataclysm.

The Kingdom of Lordaeron's former territories have seen major power shifts as of the Cataclysm.

 • With the defeat of the Lich King, his influence is fading from the Western Plaguelands, and the Cenarion Circle and Argent Crusade seek to cleanse the region of any lingering Scourge taint.
 • The Alliance and Horde have moved in to Andorhal to eliminate the remaining Scourge presence, only to tussle for control of the town.
 • The Forsaken have consolidated their power, seizing control of Hillsbrad and plague-bombing Southshore, forcing any survivors into hiding. Warchief Garrosh has ordered the Forsaken to invade the newly opened-up kingdom of Gilneas for a naval base.
 • The Scarlet Crusade has fallen into decline, having been routed by death knights at the Scarlet Enclave, left leaderless by adventurers in Northrend, and exposed as a puppet of Burning Legion dreadlords.
 • The Syndicate have lost Durnholde Keep to the Forsaken, and no longer have a presence in the Alterac Uplands.
 • The Argent Crusade is now the dominant force in the Eastern Plaguelands, and Tirion Fordring, fresh from his victory over the Lich King, has retaken his old domain of Hearthglen.
 • The hermit kingdom of Gilneas has been opened up by the Cataclysm's shattering of the Greymane Wall. The subsequent invasion by the Forsaken has led King Genn Greymane to rejoin the Alliance. Worgen packs are locked in combat with Forsaken forces in Silverpine Forest.
 • With Arugal deceased in lore, Shadowfang Keep is now occupied by Gilnean traitor Lord Godfrey and his henchmen.
 • With the loss of Hillsbrad and Southshore, Aerie Peak, Chillwind Camp, and the Arathi Highlands are now the strongest Alliance presences in the Lordaeron region. Stormpike troops have also gathered south of the Alterac Mountains.
 • Dalaran, having rebuilt, teleported to Northrend to aid in the fight against the Lich King and Malygos. Even after the Lich King's defeat, it is keeping vigil in Northrend for the foreseeable future.

Areas

The Capital City of Lordaeron once controlled the Eastern Plaguelands, the Western Plaguelands, the Tirisfal Glades, the Hillsbrad Foothills, most of Silverpine Forest, and part of the Alterac Mountains (Chillwind Point, and the town of Strahnbrad). Also possibly North Lordaeron, which is currently a Closed Zone.
