Magelo

From WoWWiki

Magelo is an online gaming community created by gamers for gamers. Started in 2001 to support EverQuest, Magelo’s Character Profile was one of the first tools that allowed online gamers to create a reliable and authenticated character profile that can be viewed outside the game. Following on its success with the EverQuest community, Magelo launched its World of Warcraft channel on 22nd May 2008.

Features

Profile

Players can create and update their character profiles with a single click of the Magelo Sync client. It supports multiple instances of the game run on a single computer (Multi-boxing) and synchronizes all of the characters being played.

The Magelo Profile displays not only the character gear and base statistics, but also optionally the bag inventory, currency and gold carried. It also breaks down modifiers to list the contributions from enchants or gems separately from the existing statistics in the piece of equipment viewed.

With WOTLK, new features are available. An achievements tab showing the points, achievements completed and a list of recent achievements are displayed. The currency carried by the character is also visible with Battleground and PVE Badges. Applied glyphs are also visible, and a PVP tab shows honor accumulated, lifetime kills and Arena team information.

Players can show their characters with their best advantages with all-round customizable features: background image, color theme, background music, transparency. A 3D model of the character is also displayed showing its exact facial features, hair style, and hair color.

The profile loads full screen, so loading different web pages for the same character will not be necessary. Players can update their characters whenever they want and as often as they want with Magelo Sync, ensuring that the profiles are always up-to-date. Players can also choose the Auto-Sync option to update automatically.

Signatures

Magelo offers a customizable signature players can use anywhere, such as in web logs or forums. It is made to resemble an identification card for the character outside the game, showing a 3D portrait of the character along with the level, race, class and server. They can choose to display a background image, a color theme and the statistics. It is updated automatically when the profile is updated, so users are not required to edit it wherever it has been posted.

Guild tools

Magelo offers guild management and recruiting services. Guild leaders are able to post entry requirements for hopeful applicants such as level, and class. Players may also announce their candidacy for recruiting guilds, displaying their playing schedule, server type and willingness to transfer their characters to another server.

Magelo will also match players looking for guilds and guilds looking for new recruits. This feature is available by clicking “View Matching Guilds” in the LFG section for the player and “View Matching Players” in the Guild Management section for the guild leader and officials.

Several guild management tools are available. The guild leader can sort out guild members with different trade skills, rank them according to various basic or advanced statistics and set guild officer and member permissions.

Illustrated Database

The Magelo database contains a wealth of information related to the game. It has information on items, spells, quests and non-player-characters (NPCs) that may help players look for a specific item upgrade, complete a certain quest, or find an NPC. The NPCs, armor and weapons in it are illustrated with 3D pictures that shows how they will look like in the game.

The database is also accessible with Magelo Sync while running the game, which allows quick browsing with minimal interruptions during game play. It will display and link information particular to the character being played, the quests that are in the quest log, as well as the region where the character is located and information regarding the currently targeted NPC.

Future Plans

The Magelo channel for World of Warcraft is currently in beta. The features below are coming soon:

Alternate profiles

Players will have the ability to create several alternate profiles for each of their characters. This feature will aid in displaying the pros and cons of wearing different sets of equipment and creating wish lists that they may display to their friends. They may also upload different sets of gear available on their characters, differentiating between PVE sets, PVP sets, and resistance-specific sets.

Manual character management

With this feature, players can manually change any piece of character equipment and play with modifiers such as gems and enchantments for a given equipment slot. This helps them in finding out the best gem/enchantment combination for a specific piece of equipment. They can also update manually all other aspects of their character like the inventory, bank, skills, talent points and reputation.

Ranking

This feature allow players to rank their own character among other character profiles on the website, sorted using statistics such as Hit Points, Mana Points, Trade skills, and Reputation. This feature can help them determine which gear upgrades, skills or talents to change in order to maximize the potential abilities of their characters.

Additional guild tools

A raid calendar, attendance list, DKP system, raid statistic and guild progression tracking tool will also be implemented in the future.

Magelo Controversy

Since Magelo actively reads a computer's Random Access Memory, some people believe that it goes against Blizzard's Terms of Use. Blizzard has made no official statement either way but various GMs have stated that Magelo may or may not be against the TOU.

The following chat was posted in a Magelo forum in February 2009.

Hi Anadin.

Any program that runs in co-ordination to World of Warcraft and potentially synchronises with the Client to Mine data from it is against the Terms of Use. I am not able to find any information on the web site to indicate how this application runs, and the processes it uses in order to gather said data, however, given the following extraction from the Legal Documentation - Terms of Use:

http://www.wow-europe.com/en/legal/termsofuse.html

Q u o t e:
C. You agree that you will not
iii. use any third-party software that intercepts, "mines", or otherwise collects information from or through World of Warcraft;

Whilst at some point this was named on the Community News pages of our Homepage, this was quickly removed as we will not encourage or endorse what is potentially a tool that will be picked up by our Anti-Cheat mechanisms and violate the Terms of Use.

A wise Panda once said 'If in doubt, do not use it'. I can only say that this too applies in this situation.

Xaldavan.
