See: Tank and Tanking

The player in a raid or party that concentrates on keeping the enemies attacking him and only him, while the other players pick them off. This is almost always a Protection-specced Warrior, but may be a Protection-specced Paladin or Feral Druid.

Also known as a primary tank. Sometimes abbreviated to the acronym MT.

The Main tank is usually the Warrior, Paladin, or Druid that has the best tanking gear and/or best tanking spec.

Prior to the release of Burning Crusade, the Main tank of a 40-man raid was considered to be one of the most important raider, if not the most important. It was a selfless task that requires nearly perfect attendance and patience on the part of the Main tank, but the great respect and honor earned from your guild and best tanking gear are the payoffs. The importance of a Main tank was such that some raiding guilds were unable to raid without their primary Main tank.

From The Way of the Punch Bag - A Guide to Tanking v2.0 from Allakhazam:

The reason why you need a main tank for a dungeon is that when fighting single targets (bosses), there is no tactic a dmg-dealer can use to reduce the amount of aggro he produces (except to stop attacking). You simply need someone who can out-aggro anyone, with high enough armor to make healing effective. Also, if a healer is being mobbed, and is forced to start healing himself excessively, it can create an aggro lock that is almost impossible for anyone but a really good tank to break.
