Some hunters focus their talents on melee weapons. These brave individuals take up the spear or axe and stalk dangerous creatures until they are close enough to pounce. They revel in the danger of their actions, feeling an unparalleled rush when they can bring a deadly creature down in equal combat - especially if they use their bare hands. Other hunters will prefer to use twin daggers, augmented by the elemental power of their traps, although their style of dagger fighting is much more loose and improvisatory than that of the Rogue.

The melee hunter in WoW is popularly considered a poor joke, as melee hunters do laughably little damage compared to a hunter actually using ranged weapons. Calling a hunter a melee hunter would be considered an insult by most hunters.
Unfortunately, some new hunters are lured into thinking that meleeing is a viable way of playing their class, since in the early levels, they have no pet to keep their enemies tanked at a distance. And, indeed, melee combat is not that much worse than ranged at very low levels.
Though often looked upon as inferior, Melee Hunting is indeed a very viable spec for PVP.

Gearing is loose, as long as it contributes to both melee and ranged. The strategy is to use the hunter's dance in excess, using melee, but also using special ranged abilities and damage, as well as CC. The logic behind it is that you output average damage if the enemy is at range or manages to close at melee. Many 5v5 teams of all melee hunters have managed to reach 2000+ arena ratings.
