Misdirection is a hunter ability which redirects threat caused by the hunter onto a friendly target for the next three shots.

Notes
When Misdirection is active, ALL attacks that happen on a tick during which ANY attack happens are Misdirected. On next tick, the buff counter is reduced by the number of attacks that happened.
This means more than three targets can be affected, for example with [Explosive Trap] or [Multi-Shot] hitting multiple mobs at once. (Only the initial explosion damage is misdirected; the damage on next tick counts against the hunter again.) This can be optimized by reducing the counter to 1 first (using two single-target shots). The multiple simultaneous hits will all be affected even with 1 charge left. By contrast, hitting 3 targets with Multi-Shot while the buff counter is 3 will reduce the counter to 0.
This can only target a raid member. (The hunter's pet counts as a raid member.) Both target and Hunter can remove the buff.
Tips and tactics
This is a highly recommended skill for instances and considered essential for raids. It allows the hunter to execute difficult pulls for the tank. It can effectively add threat for the tank both at the pull, as well as during the middle of a long fight if used repeatedly.
Usually the [Auto Shot] timer will start after applying the first special shot, thus only allowing for two specified shots to be Misdirected. For example, cast Misdirection, fire an [Arcane Shot], an Auto Shot will fire, then follow up with a Multishot.
If Misdirection is used to pull groups of linked mobs, all mobs will go onto the target of Misdirection even if they were not hit.
Note that [Distracting Shot] is not affected by Misdirection.
Works great on AoE pulls to be used with [Explosive Trap], solidly anchoring the trap aggro onto the main tank.
Works with [Volley] as well, counting as one shot fired.
Patch changes
- Patch 3.3.0 (2009-12-08): Redesigned. Instead of having finite charges, it now begins a 4-second timer when the hunter using Misdirection performs a threat-generating attack, during which all threat generated by the hunter goes to the friendly target. In addition, multiple hunters can now misdirect threat to the same friendly target simultaneously.
