Background

Before the Blightcaller - Nathanos Marris in Caverns of Time: Old Hillsbrad
Before the Blightcaller - Nathanos Marris in Caverns of Time: Old Hillsbrad

In life, Nathanos Marris was the first and last of the human ranger lords, trained by the high elves in the ways of war and a disciple of Sylvanas Windrunner, now the Banshee Queen of the Forsaken.

Nathanos's accomplishments were unprecedented. He was a tactical genius, responsible for Alliance victories spanning a decade of conflict in addition to his formidable combat skills (5 of the best agents SI:7 went after: him he presumably killed 4 and the other died 3 days after returning to Stormwind under mysterious circumstances.)

When the Scourge came he defended himself in his house, but alas, the Scourge's mighty abomination, Ramstein the Gorger slew Nathanos. Nathanos became a mindless servant of the Lich King, but he was freed by the Banshee Queen along with many other undead. He took the name Blightcaller and was given the title Champion of the Forsaken.

Now he resides at Marris Stead in the Eastern Plaguelands, recruiting soldiers to rid the Plaguelands of various nuisances and slaying all Scourge and Alliance filth that cross his path. The Blightcaller is also Supreme Commander of Horde Forces in the Eastern Plaguelands.

He has tamed two Blighthounds, always guarding him with their lives, and is able to summon a whole skeletal army within a few minutes.

Current activities

Nathanos now stands his post in the Eastern Plaguelands. He aids the Horde, distributing assignments to fight against the Scourge. His presence is also discovered by the Alliance in World of Warcraft, and since then has been branded as an abomination that must not be left alive.

Recently, Highlord Bolvar Fordragon has enlisted Alliance adventurers to kill Blightcaller.

Strategy

One strategy is to take Nathanos down as fast as possible, whilst reducing the aggro on weaker party members.
This enables the group to at least complete the quest, or gain honor under the Honor system for the kill, while all the party is (still) alive.

Numbers

  • You need at least 8 people in a raid group at lower levels, with a main and off-tank
  • It has been reported possible to take him down with three higher spec'd members such as a L70 MM Hunter, L70 Holy/prot paladin (both Kara geared) and a semi-twinked L57 mM hunter) [1] or four such as a L57 prot warrior, L63 Bal/resto Druid, L70 BM Hunter and L70 Fire Mage (see Talk page)
  • If you only want the quest completion, Nathanos, and do not mind running or dying, then this can be done solo at about L68

Preparation

Order of Attack

  • Focus on Nathanos himself and take him down as fast as possible. He has roughly 35,000 to 77,000 health and can be taken down in a minute or so, at which point no more skeletons will be added
  • The Blighthounds will not do any serious damage until he is down. Deal with them second and the skeletons third

Damage Limitation

  • If you have a tank with serious armor, use them to collect the damage from the skeletons, taking it away from cloth wearers (mage, warlock, priest) and leather wearers (Druid, Shaman and Rogue) - the Paladin and warrior spells should be useful here to redirect any aggro
  • Avoid healing as 2-4 skeletons are attracted to the healer. This includes direct heals such as Druid Healing Touch and Regrowth, heal over time spells such as Druid Rejuvenation (though this generates less threat), Warlock's drain spells, bandages, potions, pet heals and life stealing enchants. Rather than heal: run; stop fighting to reduce threat (trinkets etc with Spirit bonuses are useful here) and heal normally; or, let your tanks do the healing to attract aggro back.

Notes

A younger version of Nathanos Marris can be seen alive, in very similar attire (minus the rot), in the Town Hall of Southshore in the Old Hillsbrad Foothills wing of the Caverns of Time.
