Kaskala is the tuskarr homeland. It is a collection of villages, actually, none of them more than 400 people but clustered so close together they create one larger unit. Tuskarr are extremely family-focused, and each village is a single extended family, all connected by blood or marriage. You could look at Kaskala as a single city divided into family compounds, but that is not entirely accurate because each village

runs itself. The males of each village hunt and fish while the females raise what few crops grow in the tundra, gather berries and roots, fashion and repair clothing and tend to the homes and the children.

The isle was also the home to a group of naga who dwelled in a cave at the northern end. They were led by Lord Shalzaru, whom players were asked to kill as a quest for the former Feathermoon Stronghold. The cave itself seems to have been completely unique in design and went quite deep. There was a secret underwater passageway that lead into an inner chamber, although it had no apparent special uses besides being the location in which Lady Szallah resided. The only entrance to the central valley was in the southeastern part of the island, from all other sides the central valley was inaccessible due to unyielding cliffs.

Tuskarr houses are solidly built structures of wood and stone, with thick, thatched roofs. They are only one story and sprawl rather than rise, which makes sense given the incessant wind. Heavy shutters cover the windows and short entry halls lead from the outer door to an inner one, which keeps heat from escaping and cold from entering. Their homes are radial, with a single large chamber at the middle and the sleeping quarters arrayed around it. They have large pits in the center, lined with stone, and keep a fire blazing constantly — it heats the entire house and has spits and trays for cooking food.

Tuskarr are fishers and whalers, and they use every part of the animals they hunt. Whale bones form support beams in their homes, and heavy sealskins and other furs cover the floors and the doorways. They create dyes from various squid inks and fish scales, and have colorful weavings on their walls. Their inner clothing is bright as well, under their thick furs and oilskins. When a tuskarr woman accepts a man as her husband she weaves him a vest and he wears that against his skin. She replaces it once they have children, and again if he becomes

As I said, each village is one extended family and handles its own affairs. The eldest male of the family is the village chief, and dictates where they fish and hunt and who handles which tasks. His wife oversees the women's activities and the children's education. The different villages trade together, swapping excess items for things they need.

The underwater remains of the island are in Feralas' fatigue range.

Every tuskarr takes part in guarding Kaskala and patrolling the area for danger, but Tusklord Hrak'kar decides the schedule. He spreads the tasks evenly so no one village bears the brunt of any task or has too few men to bring in food. If one village has a poor week fishing, the others pool their resources and share their food. No one in Kaskala goes hungry or unclothed unless everyone does. That does not mean

−
they share equally — if one village has more success at whaling than the others but everyone brings home enough to feed their own families, that one village keeps its spoils. Yet if someone is hungry, the village with the most is the first to share — tuskarr consider it a mark of honor to help support their people.

Isle of Dread

Isle of Dread, prior to Cataclysm

The Isle of Dread [30, 80]VZ-FeralasBlip was an island once located off the west coast in Feralas, south of Sardor Isle. It was the home to many level 60-62 elite chimaeras referred to as "chimaerok". The chimaeras, along with technically the whole isle, was a part of the Scepter of the Shifting Sands questline which opened the gates of Ahn'Qiraj.

The chimaeras on the isle consisted of thee types, plus their leader.

WorldMap-Feralas-old

An old map of Feralas displaying the Isle of Dread.

The three lesser chimaeras dropped Chimaerok Tenderloins which was a quest-objective in Quest:The Isle of Dread!. This quest eventually led to Quest:Dirge's Kickin' Chimaerok Chops which gave the player Inv misc book 02 [Recipe: Dirge's Kickin' Chimaerok Chops]. This recipe used furthermore Chimaerok Tenderloins to create Inv misc food 65 [Dirge's Kickin' Chimaerok Chops] which prior to the Burning Crusade was the most powerful food in the game. The recipe is still (as of Cataclysm) the only epic cooking recipe in the game.

Lord Lakmaeran, in addition to also dropping Inv misc food 70 [Chimaerok Tenderloin], also dropped Inv misc food 15 [Lakmaeran's Carcass] which was an objective in the same quest. The carcass was eventually turned into a Inv misc food 15 [500 Pound Chicken] which was gobbled up by the gnome wizard Neutral Narain Soothfancy.

Cataclysm Cataclysm

Isle of Dread (Cataclysm)

Isle of Dread sunk in the Cataclysm.

Lord Shalzaru's Cave (Cataclysm)

What remains of the entrance to Lord Shalzaru's cave.

In World of Warcraft: Cataclysm, the Isle of Dread was sunk by the tidal waves unleashed by the worldwide sundering. Since the chimaeras living on the isle haven't been seen anywhere else after it was sunk, they were presumably all killed before they could make their escape. The questline was also removed. The nearby Feathermoon Stronghold was damaged and abandoned as well, and a new Feathermoon Stronghold was built on the mainland of Feralas. The cave where Shalzaru resided also collapsed.

The underwater remains of the island are in Feralas' fatigue range.
