Northrend gems by color

This page is an extensive gem list that specifically deals with only the gems from . This page is meant to be a one stop shop for gems. Some people may prefer to look at the gems arranged by the stats of the gem. You can find those on the Northrend gems by quality or you can use an external webpage where you can filter gems by the attributes you consider important.

Socketable gems

There are four socket types: red, yellow, blue, and meta. Any gem can be placed into any socket, and you will receive the bonus for that gem; however, if all the gems' colors match all the sockets' colors on an item, you will receive an additional socket bonus.

The only exception is the powerful meta gem; which can only be placed into a meta socket, and a meta socket can only accept meta gems. In addition, if the meta gem's requirements are not met, that meta gem will not be activated, and you will receive neither the meta gem's bonuses nor any socket bonus from the item containing the meta gem. You can socket the meta gem without meeting the requirements, but the meta gem will remain inactive until you do meet its requirements (which can be done either by socketing new gems, or equipping new items containing the required gems).

A meta gem requires you to have currently equipped items socketed with a certain number and color of other gems. These colors can be as either primary or secondary colors (see below.)

(Note: Meta sockets are only found on high-end head gear.)

Gem stats

A stat is associated with a primary color (red, yellow, blue). For example, strength is a red stat. That means having strength in a yellow or blue gem is impossible.

However, gems come in both primary and secondary colors. As seen on the Color Wheel below, if you mix red and yellow, you get orange. An orange gem will provide one red stat and one yellow stat, each in approximately one-half the amount that a primary-colored gem would.

It is most important to note that, for the purposes of both socket bonuses and meta-gem requirements, a secondary-colored gem is considered to be a gem of either of its primary colors. Thus, an orange gem will be considered to be both a red gem AND a yellow gem at the same time.

This means that if you really want strength, and your item only contains a yellow socket, then the only way to get both strength and the socket bonus is with an orange gem, which will dilute the strength stat with a yellow stat like critical strike rating or resilience.

Special gems

Prismatic

A majority of the Northrend prismatic gems are Jeweler Gems and are usable only by a Jewelcrafter.

Note that even though prismatic gems have flavor text specifically saying red, yellow, or blue, and prismatic gems say "any socket" this still does not include meta sockets. It is still true that "Meta sockets will only accept meta gems, and meta gems can only be used in meta sockets."[1]

Meta

Meta gems match Meta Socket meta sockets. These gems have special requirements that must be met for the gem's bonus to activate. For example, in order to gain the benefits of a [Destructive Skyfire Diamond] there must be a minimum of 2 gems of the listed colors (Red, Blue & Yellow in this example) between all the items currently equipped on the character.

It should be noted that gems which match multiple socket colors can fulfill meta gem requirements for any color they match (a Green gem counts as a blue gem and a yellow gem, Orange = yellow + red, and Purple counts as red + blue). For example, if a meta gem needs 3 red and 2 yellow to activate, 3 orange (red/yellow) gems can activate this gem. Also, a gem does not have to match its socket to contribute to a meta gem; therefore, the player may choose to lose an item's gem bonus in order to activate the meta gem's bonus. As mentioned at the top of this article, so far, only high-end helms have meta sockets.

Notes

  • Multi-colored gems will match either of their colors when socketed. For example, an orange gem can be used to activate an item bonus with a red or yellow socket.
  • Multi-colored gems will count toward both of their colors when activating a meta gem. For example, a meta gem that requires 5 red and 5 yellow gems can be activated with 5 orange gems.
  • You can replace a gem already socketed in an item with another one, destroying only the gems you are replacing.
  • A gem does not have to match its socket color to count toward a meta gem's bonus.

This is a "stat plus stat" addition table that lists all Northrend gems:

  • If you take the numbers from the column header and add the row header, you get the actual stats of the gems.
  • The background colors are the stat colors in the headers and the gem colors in the table.
  • The table also shows how the different cuts are called (the adjectives). If you associate the adjective of a cut with the name of the right material, you get the full name of the gem.
  • Also, mousing over a gem will show it's description.

[U] Northrend uncommon gem.
[P] Northrend perfect uncommon gem. (When cut, an uncommon northrend gem has a chance to be perfect through the Gem Perfection ability. Perfect uncommon gems are between uncommon and rare in quality (except for Mp5).

[E] Northrend epic gem.
[D] Jewelcrafter-only [Dragon's Eye] gem. (These are made by jewelcrafters for themselves. They are approximately 35% better than the associated epic gem.) Also, ignore the background color in the table for these as they are all prismatic (all colors). (Note: They are expected to lose their prismatic quality and get slightly better in the next major patch Patch 3.2.0.)
