The Alliance–Horde War is an intercontinental war that will begin shortly after the Cataclysm, as part of the expansion set World of Warcraft: Cataclysm.

  +
Grand Magister Rommath is the leader of all blood elf magisters on Azeroth, and was a fiercely loyal servant of Kael'thas Sunstrider. He is found within Sunfury Spire alongside Lor'themar Theron and Halduron Brightwing.
Background
Five years after the Battle for Mount Hyjal, the fragile truce between the Horde and Alliance had all but evaporated. In the wake of the Third War and The Founding of Durotar, the Forsaken entered a partnership of convenience with the Horde while the night elves and gnomes emerged from ages of solitude to join the Alliance. For another year the armistice held, though tensions continued to mount as worldwide conflicts drew the two sides closer to all-out war and fighting erupted in strategic battlegrounds. Despite these frequent skirmishes, the Horde and Alliance often set aside their differences and joined forces to face a number of threats. In time the blood elves and draenei led them through the Dark Portal to wage the War in Outland against the Burning Legion.

  +
Biography
Following the year-long campaign in Outland, the Horde returned to Azeroth with a new ally in the Mag'har, led by Garrosh Hellscream. Soon, the long-missing Varian Wrynn put an end to 's schemes and returned to reclaim the throne of Stormwind. Attempts at diplomacy between Thrall and Wrynn soon fell apart as a peace conference in Theramore was ambushed by the Twilight's Hammer. Attention quickly turned northward, however, as the looming threat of the bore down on the mortal races of Azeroth.

  +
Grand Magister Rommath was part of Kael'thas Sunstrider's company of blood elves whom travelled into Outland, the likes of which included some of the sin'dorei's most powerful individuals. While Kael'thas sought to secure a new homeland for his people, the majority of them had remained behind on Azeroth. At his Prince's request, Rommath was sent back to Quel'Thalas with the radical new teachings advocated by Illidan Stormrage (which Rommath smoothly attributed to Prince Kael'thas), to sate the sin'dorei's thirst for power -- the technique of forcibly stripping magic away from several external sources, including demons. The majority of the blood elves quickly adapted to this efficient new method, and those who opposed it were banished from Quel'Thalas. Rommath was instructed to help rebuild Quel'Thalas, and await the Prince's return.

  +
Rommath and his magisters quickly went about reclaiming much of Silvermoon City, using their great power to cleanse much of Quel'Thalas of its Scourge taint. Rommath would go on to hold a position of honor within the city, as the Grand Magister.
Garrosh Hellscream and Varian Wrynn, appointed as the supreme commanders of the Horde Expedition and Alliance Vanguard respectively, who had previously butted heads in Theramore, led their forces to Northrend where they waged war against the Scourge. Though fighting a common enemy, tensions between the Horde and Alliance grew swiftly until spilling over after the Battle of Angrathar the Wrathgate. During the resulting Battle for the Undercity, Varian Wrynn, grief-stricken over the loss of , and the state of the former Capital City of Lordaeron, lashed out at Thrall and declared war against the Horde. Hostilities continued to escalate for the remainder of the War against the Lich King, until the Lich King was finally defeated.

  +
Burning Crusade
With both factions recovering from war, the Alliance and Horde attempt to resume their tentative peace. Yet political tensions rise as the night elves of Darnassus have refused trade with the Horde and barred them from Ashenvale in protest of the Wrathgate. Relations worsen as Twilight Hammer orcs under the guise of Horde forces, kill and skin night elf sentinels to frame the Horde. In an effort to quell the rising tensions, Hamuul Runetotem attempted to pursue diplomatic talks with his fellow night elf druids. Yet the talks became violent when the druid meeting was attacked by Twilight Hammer orcs believed to be sent by Garrosh Hellscream, acting warchief of the Horde.

  +
Grand Magister Rommath remained in contact with his brethren in Outland, and gained knowledge of what was hinted to be uncorrupted orcs still active around Draenor. Lor'themar Theron used this connection as a bargaining chip during his negotiations with the Horde, which would ultimately lead to the sin'dorei being accepted as an equal nation of its own. With their new alliance sealed, Rommath's magisters had any dissidents speaking out against the state quickly silenced.

  +
Around this time, Rommath approved the creation of the Blood Knight order, which included the siphoning of the subdued naaru, M'uru, whom Kael'thas had sent back to Silvermoon for his peoples' use. This decision brought him into conflict with Halduron Brightwing, the leader of the Farstriders, who was deeply opposed to M'uru's exploitation.
Three years have passed since the military forces of the Horde and Alliance first set foot on the shores of Northrend, and they now wage war amidst the disasters wrought by 's return to the world. Thrall has left the Horde to lead the Earthen Ring's efforts in preventing the rift beneath the Maelstrom from tearing apart the world, and has appointed Garrosh Hellscream as Warchief of the Horde in his absence. King Varian Wrynn, convinced that the Horde has remained unchecked for too long, continues to lead the Alliance.

  +
Despite the promising future that Kael'thas had planned for his people, the Prince would later pledge his loyalties to Kil'jaeden and the Burning Legion. Returning to Quel'Thalas in a mad bid to summon his new master, Kael'thas and his felboods briefly attacked Silvermoon to steal the imprisoned M'uru, and use the Sunwell on the Isle of Quel'Danas as a means to usher his new master into Azeroth.
Conflicts
Eastern Kingdoms
Employing the Val'kyr to raise a mighty army, the Forsaken have begun an bold campaign to secure their hold over Lordaeron. The town of Hillsbrad Fields was attacked by the Forsaken, forcing many of its residents to flee to the town of Southshore. A few farmers and Magistrate Burnside led a valiant resistance but were eventually defeated and imprisoned by the Forsaken war machine. Those who stayed to defend Hillsbrad eventually became prisoners in what is now known as the Sludge Fields, a Forsaken prison facility that secretly experiment on its prisoners to create a new breed of Forsaken zombie.

  +
Rommath, however, remained loyal to Silvermoon, suggesting that he was likely unaware of Kael'thas' switch of allegiances. During Lady Liadrin's trip to Shattrath in order to secure a new source of power for the Blood Knights, Rommath represented the Blood Knights' interests in Sunfury Spire.
The Forsaken forces later march onto the town of Southshore and completely annihilate all life with in the region by deploying the New Plague. Magistrate Henry Maleb led the Hillsbrad Refugees to Fenris Keep, where they have been taking refuge. The Ruins of Southshore is left inhospitable, and will be so for several decades. The ramifications of the Forsaken Blight forced the high echelons of the Horde to reconsider the free use of such a potent weapon. Warchief Garrosh has since forbidden further production or deployment of the New Plague. Instead, the Forsaken will use a diluted version of the Forsaken Blight.

  +
Kael'thas was ultimately killed for his treachery, and Rommath's unwavering loyalty to Silvermoon throughout the ordeal earned him the unlikely respect of Ranger-General Halduron. However, Rommath himself was left shattered by this turn of events, and resolved not to simply stand on the sidelines while decisions are made to damn his people further.
By orders of the new Warchief of the Horde, Garrosh Hellscream, the Forsaken mobilise and move into Gilneas to secure a port for the Horde in southern Lordaeron. The Gilneans, now transformed into worgen, attempt to fight off the invaders as best they can. Eventually the night elves arrive in Gilneas, bringing both vital military aid and the truth behind the worgen curse. Likewise, Orcs reinforce the Forsaken forces, causing an escalation into an all-out battle between the Alliance and the Horde in the region. The Forsaken, against the orders of the Warchief to cease production, unleash their devastating Forsaken Blight against Gilneas. Many of the survivors flee across the sea to Teldrassil, where the night elves grant them sanctuary.

  +
In the Shadow of the Sun
Even with Gilneas falling into the hands of the Forsaken, the fighting between the Gilnean worgen and the Forsaken continues. Bloodfang worgen who had recently allied themselves with the Gilneas Liberation Front, with the help of 7th Legion reinforcements from Stormwind, destroyed three Orc gunships that had arrived. The ships were full of supplies, weapons and soldiers. Later, the Forsaken kill some of the Hillsbrad refugees on Fenris Isle and resurrected them, bolstering Forsaken forces and somewhat making up for the loss of the three orc gunships. However, after this attack, many of the Hillsbrad refugees decide to take the Worgen curse offered by Darius, rather than be resurrected as Forsaken. Later, the Forsaken discovered that lord Darius Crowley and Ivar Bloodfang are having a meeting in Deep Elem Mine, and Sylvanas sent a squadron of elite Veteran Forsaken Troopers under the leadership of Master Forteski to trap and slay the Worgen leaders. However, the Forsaken soon discovered that instead of trapping an enemy, they were trapped themselves. As a result, the whole squadron of elite Forsaken Troopers were destroyed.

  +
Following the betrayal of Prince Kael'thas, the fight has somewhat diminished from Grand Magister Rommath. Rommath, who had once fervently supported the Prince in his plight, has been left the most cold and barren of all. Rommath is present as Archmage Aethas Sunreaver arrives in Silvermoon City.

  +
Aethas requests the aid of his people in dealing with the crazed aspect of magic, Malygos the Spellweaver, who had resolved to destroy mortal spell-casters. Rommath, however, immediately denies him—referencing the sin'dorei's time as prisoners in the dungeons of Dalaran, awaiting execution while the Kirin Tor did nothing. Rommath coldly notes that Modera, Ansirem, and the rest of the Kirin Tor can "rot in hell" for all he cares, and informs Aethas that none of his magisters will assist him. He mentions that only the Regent Lord possesses the ability to overrule his judgement in such matters.
A convoy of Veteran Forsaken Troopers and Forsaken catapults were ambushed by the Bloodfang pack while attempting to cross Olsen's Farthing in Silverpine Forest. The ambush resulted in all those Forsaken troopers being killed and the destruction of the Forsaken catapults. Warlord Torok sent Sea Dogs to fight the Hillsbrad worgen that were swimming to the Decrepit Fields from Fenris Isle. The Sea Dogs attacked the Hillsbrad worgen but were eventaully defeated after killing many worgen.

  +
Lor'themar stops their bickering, though despite his apparent neutrality in the matter, Lor'themar later finds himself agreeing with Rommath's opinion.
Druids in the Gilneas Liberation Front used their bear form in guerilla warfare against Horde forces at the Forsaken Front, which resulted in the loss of a few Horde battalions. Eventually the Horde forces learn of this tactic, and it becomes ineffective after counter-measures are implemented.

  +
Rommath is present during Lor'themar's return from Quel'Lithien Lodge, though appears to have disapproved of his motivation for travelling there even more so than Halduron.
Eventaully, the tide turned. The worgen and their Alliance allies were driven back. The town of Ambermill was conquered by Forsaken forces and another town, Pyrewood Village, was burned to the ground. In a desperate final push, Alliance and Gilnean forces met the Forsaken army on the Battlefront for one final battle. The Forsaken emerged victorious and the Gilneas Liberation Front was forced to retreat. While the future of Gilneas remains uncertain, the Alliance invasion of Silverpine ended in failure.

  +
Sylvanas Windrunner later journeys to Sunfury Spire, and both Rommath and Halduron accompany Lor'themar to meet with her. Sylvanas reveals that the Horde prepares for war against the Lich King, and as members, the sin'dorei are expected to follow suit. She demands that the Blood Elves accompany her forces to Northrend, and after some argumentation - not least fueled by Sylvanas noting that not standing with the Forsaken is standing against them, and that Arthas would only destroy Silvermoon once again - Lor'themar agrees.
Forsaken forces have since tried to invade the Hinterlands and launched an all out assault on the Highvale elves of Quel'Danil Lodge. The eventual outcome of this remains uncertain.

  +
Rommath, however, is outraged at Lor'themar's decision. He throws Sylvanas' offers of aid back at her, and reminds her that every step she took to assist Quel'Thalas was by her own accord—that she would now blackmail them into a war, holding their lands to "ransom", is an absurd contradiction.
With the weakening of the Scourge after the War against the Lich King, the Alliance forces led by have claimed the western part of Andorhal, and the Forsaken forces led by have claimed the eastern part of the city. The two factions are currently fighting each other for control of the whole city. During the Battle for Andorhal, the Forsaken, their ranks bolstered by the use of the val'kyr to raise their slain foes, push the Alliance out of the city and claim Andorhal as their own.

  +
Sylvanas simply reitirates that her offers were just that, offers, and that the sin'dorei were more than free to deny her. She notes that all she now asks in return is the power of the sin'dorei, in order to defeat their greatest enemy.
Following the events at Silverpine Forest, the Bloodfang pack have since been fighting a guerrilla war with the Forsaken forces at Hillsbrad. They are later found allying with the Stormpike Guard and have been amassing their forces at Purgation Isle. Due to the efforts of Kingslayer Orkus and Horde adventurers, their plans to launch an all out attack were uncovered. High Warlord Cromush asked for reinforcements from the Frostwolf Clan, but were denied by Drek'thar, who let his personal feelings get in the way of his duty. Cromush panics at the Frostwolf Clan's abandonment but later composes himself and sends Horde adventurers to blow up the Alliance vanguard forces before their offensive on Hillsbrad could begin.

  +
Rommath does not say a word in response, and Lor'themar intervenes.
Forsaken forces are later found establishing Galen's Fall for their impending invasion on the nation of Stromgarde. To aid them in their efforts, they have recruited the fallen prince of Stromgarde, Galen Trollbane. He aids Horde adventurers in taking the legendary sword, Trol'kalar, so that the Forsaken may use it as a weapon against the Alliance.

  +
Later, Rommath confronts Lor'themar about his willingness to commit to such a war. Lor'themar reasons that they would lose both the Forsaken and the Horde's support if they do not assist, and would likely lose most of Quel'Thalas too. Rommath does not relent, however, and even puts forward the notion that the elves who had perished in order to protect Quel'Thalas would have preferred to die in vain, than have given their lives to watch the Regent Lord become a pawn. Lor'themar notes Rommath's increasingly desperate appearance, this probably being the first time he had lost poise and composure in years.
In the Twin Peaks near Grim Batol in the Twilight Highlands, the dwarven Wildhammer clan fight against the orcish Dragonmaw clan, having recently rejoined the Horde, battle for control of this strategic mountainous region. The Twin Peaks are crucial for staging effective offensives against the black dragonflight and the Twilight's Hammer, who currently control the Twilight Highlands. To the south, the humans of Marshtide Watch battle the Stonard orcs in the Swamp of Sorrows.

  +
Lor'themar asserts his authority on the matter, and notes that if playing the pawn is required to keep Quel'Thalas safe, then he will gladly do so—and so will Rommath. Rommath simply states that another leader of the sin'dorei had once said the same thing to him, and that they buried him on Quel'Danas. Rommath leaves to inform the Blood Knight leadership of the Regent Lord's decision.
Kalimdor
All-out battles have erupted in the Barrens, Ashenvale, and the Stonetalon Mountains. Due to the Cataclysm the Barrens have been split into the Northern Barrens and the Southern Barrens.

  +
Wrath of the Lich King
In the Southern Barrens Alliance forces have invaded the eastern lands while the Horde has mainatined control of the west. The Alliance has constructed a new military outpost to try to solidify their control of their new territory while the Horde has done the same to prevent further Alliance expansion. The central region between the two forts has become a war zone as the factions fight for control. The Alliance launched an attack on the peaceful village of Camp Taurajo, which ended in a massacre. This act of cruelty by the Alliance bolstered the Horde's resolve. The Horde has begun to drive the Alliance back as a result. The new Horde general made an example of General Hawthorne, the general behind the Taurajo Massacre, by sending Horde adventurers to ambush and kill him. In the initial Horde counter-attack, the dwarven fortress at Bael Modan was destroyed.

Grand Magister Rommath plays a part in the restoration of Quel'Delar and is seen at the restored Sunwell. After a non-Blood Elf player is permitted to enter, Quel'Delar is submerged within the Sunwell as Lor'themar and Rommath observe it.

  +
Though Lor'themar is somewhat skeptical of its authenticity, Rommath is certain of it. Lor'themar attempts to take the blade himself, though Quel'Delar knocks him back and slices a large portion of his health off. Rommath holds the onlooking player in an ice tomb as the Sunwell Guardians surround the player with weapons drawn, and demands to know the meaning of this supposed treachery. Auric Sunchaser intervenes, and informs Rommath that Quel'Delar must decide on its own wielder. Rommath grudgingly accepts his reasoning, and calls off the guards. Rommath orders the player to take the restored Quel'Delar and begone, if it is truly not meant to be theirs.
In the Northern Barrens, the Horde defensive post Mor'shan Rampart is under attack by the Alliance. In Ashenvale, the Horde has been recently able to conquer more of the ancient forest and have cut down even more trees. This allowed the Horde to wrest control of Silverwind Refuge. Meanwhile Zoram'gar Outpost has its defenses improved and a new Horde camp, Hellscream's Watch, has been built overlooking the Night Elf village of Astranaar. The Horde has begun launching air raids on Astrannar from the new camp. Maestra's Post, Raynewood Retreat, and surrounding towers have also been attacked by the Horde. Despite Silverwind Refuge and other Alliance outposts being conquered by the Horde, Alliance forces continue to hold what ground they have left.

Grand Magister Rommath is a highly talented, highly pragmatic master-magister and politician. With Rommath's somewhat cryptic assistance, Lor'themar was able to soundly seal the blood elves' alliance with the Horde, despite vocal concerns about the sin'dorei's capabilities from several of its existing members. Rommath held no qualms about his magisters using heavy handed, totalitarian methods to keep his country united. He has been noted as coming into conflict with the leader of the Farstriders, Halduron Brightwing, several times.

  +
Rommath was one of Kael'thas Sunstrider's most staunchly loyal supporters. Upon travelling back to Quel'Thalas, Rommath quickly advocated the teachings spread by Illidan Stormrage, attributing it to Kael'thas. As such, when Kael'thas' true loyalties were unveiled, Rommath was shattered - perhaps more so than anyone in Quel'Thalas. Rommath has since undergone subtle changes, most notably being in regards to the future of the blood elven people. Having lost much of his composure, Rommath was strongly against committing the weathered sin'dorei to the Northrend war, to the point where he vocally condemned Lor'themar's decision to fight in it. Regardless, with the war going well, both Rommath and Lor'themar were later seen at the Sunwell alongside several of their high elven cousins.

Grand Magister Rommath is the leader of all blood elf magisters on Azeroth, and was a fiercely loyal servant of Kael'thas Sunstrider. He is found within Sunfury Spire alongside Lor'themar Theron and Halduron Brightwing.

Biography

Grand Magister Rommath was part of Kael'thas Sunstrider's company of blood elves whom travelled into Outland, the likes of which included some of the sin'dorei's most powerful individuals.[1] While Kael'thas sought to secure a new homeland for his people, the majority of them had remained behind on Azeroth. The majority of the blood elves quickly adapted to this efficient new method, and those who opposed it were banished from Quel'Thalas.[2] Rommath was instructed to help rebuild Quel'Thalas, and await the Prince's return.

Rommath and his magisters quickly went about reclaiming much of Silvermoon City, using their great power to cleanse much of Quel'Thalas of its Scourge taint. Rommath would go on to hold a position of honor within the city, as the Grand Magister.

Burning Crusade

Bc icon This section concerns content related to The Burning Crusade.

Grand Magister Rommath remained in contact with his brethren in Outland, and gained knowledge of what was hinted to be uncorrupted orcs still active around Draenor.[3] Lor'themar Theron used this connection as a bargaining chip during his negotiations with the Horde, which would ultimately lead to the sin'dorei being accepted as an equal nation of its own. With their new alliance sealed, Rommath's magisters had any dissidents speaking out against the state quickly silenced.[4]

Kael'thas was ultimately killed for his treachery, and Rommath's unwavering loyalty to Silvermoon throughout the ordeal earned him the unlikely respect of Ranger-General Halduron. However, Rommath himself was left shattered by this turn of events, and resolved not to simply stand on the sidelines while decisions are made to damn his people further.[5]

In the Shadow of the Sun

WoW-novel-logo-16x62 This section concerns content related to the Warcraft novels, novellas, or short stories.

Lor'themar stops their bickering, though despite his apparent neutrality in the matter, Lor'themar later finds himself agreeing with Rommath's opinion.

Rommath is present during Lor'themar's return from Quel'Lithien Lodge, though appears to have disapproved of his motivation for travelling there even more so than Halduron.

Sylvanas simply reitirates that her offers were just that, offers, and that the sin'dorei were more than free to deny her. She notes that all she now asks in return is the power of the sin'dorei, in order to defeat their greatest enemy.

Rommath does not say a word in response, and Lor'themar intervenes.

Wrath of the Lich King

Wrath-Logo-Small This section concerns content related to Wrath of the Lich King.

Grand Magister Rommath plays a part in the restoration of Quel'Delar and is seen at the restored Sunwell. After a non-Blood Elf player is permitted to enter, Quel'Delar is submerged within the Sunwell as Lor'themar and Rommath observe it.

For a Blood Elf player, Rommath gives words of support, referencing Quel'Delar's broken and abandoned state to Silvermoon following the betrayal of Kael'thas. He instructs the player to return to Archmage Aethas Sunreaver with the restored blade, and notes that the sin'dorei shall always rise up to face any foe.
