The region.
The Pit Commander is apparently a rank within of the annihilan hierarchy; it is unknown whether it ranks above or below a normal Pit Lord. One can be seen commanding the Burning Legion force at the Outland side of the Dark Portal.

Wrath of the Lich King history
Remember that when killing the Pit Commander, the guards from both factions will help too. It is advisable that the MT (main tank) of your party attacks it first before the guards, so you and your party can loot it and gain XP.

  +
Cataclysm
The Pit Commander summons level 60 or 70 Infernals. You should let the guards kill the Infernals while your party focuses on the Pit Commander.

Cataclysm changes
Note: If the Pit Commander steps on you it will deal a lot of damage and possibly even kill you. It is advisable to move away from him when he is about to die, because he will fall forwards and if you are there it is very likely that you will die.

cata-section
When going to explore Outland it is a good idea to kill him, then go through the pass, so you explore the area and get XP for discovering it.

Areas affected:
The Pit Commander is actually rather easy to kill considering that all one needs to do is pull him towards the Alliance and Horde guards. A common technique is to use a warlock's imp to attack him, then as soon as the first fireball is shot, immediately pull your imp back towards you from the stairway and let the Pit Commander charge into the guards.
