Placeholders

A placeholder is just that, something that holds the place for something in the future. These include boilerplates, placeholder images, and stubs.

In World of Warcraft the term usually refers to an item or model placed into the game by necessity or testing purposes, especially during the creation of more detailed (if not unique) models intended to replace them. These models are occasionally somewhat misleading taken at face value; others are specifically identified as such, like Captain Placeholder.
