Talk:Mobile

Back to page

This is a version of the main page designed for low powered devices. It's under development, and ideas and tweaks are welcomed :) Kirkburn  talk  contr 20:53, 13 March 2009 (UTC)

I'll make a fuller appearance here in about 10 minutes. --Sky (t · c · w) 00:14, 14 March 2009 (UTC)
Ok, so here are a couple of reasons why the page changed:
  • Mobile Wikipedia
  • Graphics are bad on small screens, imo. Plus the fact that they suck up your bandwidth, so to speak.
  • Wanted to keep it light on the directory stuff. If a person's looking for something specific, they're hitting up the pagename. If they aren't, than they probably want the search bar instead. Size to benefit ratio is low, imo.
  • Added the FA because of Mobile. I made a change to template:FA/Design so that the pics wouldn't load here.
  • Also removed IRC link. I don't really know that it's possible to IRC from a mobile device...
I'm not inflexible, naturally. Just wanted to make my points known. --Sky (t · c · w) 00:52, 14 March 2009 (UTC)
The difference between this version and Wikipedia's is, that they use a different skin as well. On my iPhone, even the mobile portal isn't a great solution, because the sidebar uses a lot of space and the article pages tear the whole site apart. I think a different skin in addition to this portal would be better.--Iggey (talk) 21:11, 14 March 2009 (UTC)
We can address that easily once the next version of MediaWiki is released; with it, we can skin for mobile devices specifically. --Sky (t · c · w) 18:02, 16 March 2009 (UTC)
Sky, thanks for the tweaks - fair points for all of it basically :) Kirkburn  talk  contr 17:59, 16 March 2009 (UTC)

Implementing Portable versionEdit

I'm a mobile junkie. I have an iPhone and even a PSP that I surf the net occasionally (as well as check for valid web site access.) From what little I've seen, I can say this:

  • Don't try to group all mobile devices into one group, or discriminate them by forcing a special version. In particular, iPhone (Safari) is really smart, so it could be classified as a regular browser.
  • On Wikipedia, I get the link to use the mobile version if I'm on my iPhone. Often, it's not necessary, as the content fits easy (or with little horizontal scrolling.) The mobile version helps on pages with large images to keep in line.
  • On wowwiki, I've seen only one minor issue with iPhone and the older wowwiki css: there's a little overlap. I'll try to post a picture later. But otherwise, smooth sailing from what I've seen.
