The proto-dragons (also spelled protodragons) are a race of pale white dragons with mint-green spinal ridges that serve the vrykul in the Howling Fjord. They live in an area of Utgarde Keep called the dragon pens. Vrykul use them as flying mounts to help them with their constant siege of Valgarde.
Proto-Dragons were sort of the early version before dragons really evolved into the sentient, beautiful majestic creatures that they are in Warcraft right now; they were these sort of primitive things that the Vrykul really lorded over.[1]
From Kaplan Himself
In the Blizzcast Episode 3 Jeffrey Kaplan Qouted on the Proto-Dragons:
"So the second room you come to is this really cool Proto-Dragon stable and the Proto-Dragons were sort of the early version before dragons really evolved into the sentient, beautiful majestic creatures that they are in Warcraft right now; they were these sort of primitive things that the Vrykul really lorded over."

Speculation
This article or section includes speculation, observations or opinions possibly supported by lore or by Blizzard officials.
It should not be taken as representing official lore! |
The word 'proto' may lead one to think they are the first flight of dragons, the other colors splitting from white. As such, they may lack the magical abilities of the more prominent dragonflights, certainly the powers bestowed upon the five major flights by the Titans, and may not even be intelligent at all.
It is also possible that proto-dragons could signify a mutation (Or devolution, as the prefix 'proto' refers to an earlier version of the creature in question) in their Dragonflight. After all, the Blue Dragonflight are prominent in Northrend and such an unnatural occurrence could explain more about the hate Malygos has suddenly developed against all mortal spellcasters.
Mount?
As also said in the Blizzcast Episode 3, Bornakk and Kaplan hint twords a Proto-Dragon mount.
- Bornakk: "Proto-Dragon mount right?"
- Jeffrey Kaplan: "Proto-Dragon mount perhaps, maybe."
