Sam Steamwheedle is a noble trade prince who resides on the great island of Undermine. Even though he wasn’t born into nobility, he earned it when he and his followers overthrew the dirty trade prince, Zaxs Barterbolt of Barterbolt Enterprise. Sams close friend and right hand man in the revolt against Zaxs was Yanik Venture, who later turned on him after he grew jealous of his friend's success and wealth. Yanik and his loyal followers started the Venture Trading Company, a rival company in close competition with Sam's Steamwheedle Cartel.

During Sam’s journeys throughout Kalimdor, he befriended many wealthy individuals, one of these being Nixx Sprocketspring. Together, Sam and Nixx erected the first goblin city in Kalimdor, called Gadgetzan.

During his commutes between Undermine and Steamwheedle Port, which just lies east of Gadgetzan, he occasionally came across pirates who called themselves the Southsea Renegades. One confrontation, however, ended with half of Sam’s shipment finding its way to the bottom of the Great Sea. Through this, Sam found Fleet Master Seahorn of the Blackwater Raiders and asked him to help fend off the Southsea Renegades. Seahorn accepted on the condition that Sam help him control the violence in Seahorn's port town of Booty Bay.

Months after the Battle of the Frozen Throne, Sam Steamwheedle helped his good friend Gazlowe transport many explosives to the city of Orgrimmar. To do so, he had to ship the explosives up the Southfury River, which at the time was not wide enough for ships to travel. So Sam erected the town of Ratchet for the purpose of caravanning explosives and other material into Orgrimmar.

The last town Sam Steamwheedle built was Everlook, in the mountains of Winterspring. The town was built for the study of astronomy. Many Goblin and Gnome Astronomers gather in Everlook to further study the ways of the stars and outlying planets that surround Azeroth. Recently, many travelers have made this their last stop before ascending Mount Hyjal.

In Warcraft III, Ratso Steamwheedle is one of the neutral Goblin Tinkers. It's possible that he is Sam's brother, but as of yet this is unknown.
