65 Energy
Instant Cast
5 yard Range

Limitations

  • Requires Melee Weapon
  • Must be stealthed
  • Only works on Humanoids
  • Will not work on targets that are in combat
  • Any damage caused will revive the target
  • Only one target may be sapped at a time

Notes

  • Does not have a chance to break early, always lasting the full duration unless the sapped humanoid is hit. Suffers diminishing returns & duration in PVP.
  • No longer considered an incapacitate effect.

Rank Table

Rank Duration Level Cost
1 25 seconds 10 4s
2 35 seconds 28 81s
3 45 seconds 40 1g 4s

Tips

  • Patch 2.0 and 2.0.3 buffed Sap and Improved Sap significantly.
  • Sap is an effective crowd control technique, especially with the improved talent. Don't forget to tell the party which mob you are sapping, as any damage breaks the effect.
  • Sap does not cause threat, meaning that if you Sap a mob and then move out of normal aggro range, the mob will not attack you after the sap effect is broken.
  • You may choose to sap a different target. The first sap will wake when the second one is sapped.
  • Out in the world, mobs that are sapped won't be tagged as your kill until you deal damage to them. Be wary of other players stealing your kill.
  • Sap can be useful in a PvP environment, to even out a 2-on-1, to take out a shaman's totems before you fight him, to capture a flag quickly in Battlegrounds, or even after a Ability vanish [Vanish]. Remember, like all crowd control effects, Sap is limited to a 10 second duration in PvP.
  • Sapping a player of the opposite Faction will turn on your PvP Flag. Be wary.

Burning Crusade Patch 2.1

With the release of Patch 2.1, the mechanics for Sap have been changed.

  • Sap will no longer remove you from Ability stealth [Stealth].
  • The talent Improved Sap has been renamed to Ability rogue dirtydeeds [Dirty Tricks], and increases the range of Sap and Spell shadow mindsteal [Blind] by 2/5 yards whilst decreasing the energy cost by 25/50%.

Burning Crusade Patch 2.4

More changes have been made to Sap.

  • Sap is no longer considered an incapacitate effect; changed to allow more creatures to be crowd controlled in dungeons who were previously immune.
