Championing is a system for customized reputation gains from dungeons, introduced in World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King. Killing a monster that yields reputation inside a dungeon while wearing a particular faction's tabard will grant reputation with that faction; it allows a player to acquire reputation in a dungeon with a faction other than that normally associated with the dungeon.
The tabards that allow championing can be acquired at friendly reputation with their respective factions.
Factions that can be championed
Only some factions can be championed.
Wrath of the Lich King
Only level 80 dungeons on normal mode or heroic mode can be used for championing the Wrath of the Lich King factions. For instance, wearing [Tabard of the Ebon Blade] in normal Utgarde Pinnacle will yield reputation with the Knights of the Ebon Blade, while other instances like normal Violet Hold will not. Dungeons that are not categorized as level 80 dungeons do not yield reputation. Additionally, level 80 dungeons on normal mode yield less reputation than their heroic equivalents.
The WotLK factions that can be championed are:
If you do not wear a champion tabard, you will gain reputation with either the Horde Expedition or the Alliance Vanguard, depending on your race.
Cataclysm
Cataclysm introduced championing for Horde and Alliance capital city factions. These tabards can be worn at any level and work in any dungeon except for those that reward reputation whether you wear a tabard or not (like Burning Crusade dungeons).
Additionally, the following six Cataclysm factions can be championed in level 85 dungeons (normal or heroic):
