World Spawn

The Shade of the Horseman will attack AllianceKharanos, AllianceGoldshire, AllianceAzure Watch, HordeRazor Hill, HordeBrill, and HordeFalconwing Square. These attacks consist primarily of the Shade of the Horseman circling overhead on a flying horse. As he circles the village, he throws flaming pumpkins at the various buildings.

Since 3.0.2 the spawn has changed from a 4 hour interval world event to a player-driven spawn. In order to cause the Shade of the Horseman to spawn, a player must first complete the pre-quest A [70] Fire Brigade Practice or H [70] Fire Training available from the Alliance Costumed Orphan Matron or Horde Masked Orphan Matron standing by the buckets of water. This quest can only be obtained when the Shade of the Horseman is NOT present and is also unobtainable for a certain period of time after the Shade of the Horseman has either been killed or has ridden off.

After the pre-quest has been completed, the player can call the Shade of the Horseman once a day with A [70] "Let the Fires Come!" (Alliance) or H [70] "Let the Fires Come!" (Horde), as long as they have not completed A [70] Stop the Fires! or H [70] Stop the Fires! already on that day. You cannot do both "Let the Fires Come!" and Stop the Fires! on the same day.

All players are able to get the quest A [70] Stop the Fires! or H [70] Stop the Fires! when the Shade of the Horseman is attacking the village regardless of whether they have done the prequest or not. They must then rally to put out all the fires using [Water Buckets] from the large water tub to douse the flames. (A large water tub is also part of the Hallow's End H [70] Fire Training and A [70] Fire Brigade Practice quests, and a [Water Bucket] looted from those tubs can be used to douse the flames.) [Water Buckets] can also be thrown other players to give it to them, although if they are not standing still, the targeting does not lend itself to passing the bucket.

The key is for all players to work together on the same building and then move to the next. Even better is to form a line and throw buckets up the line to put out the fires. You do not need to be grouped to throw a bucket to a player; as long as they are not holding a bucket already, it will go into their inventory and they can then use it to put out a fire or pass to another player. If all the fires are put out before the Shade of the Horseman rides off, then both A [70] "Let the Fires Come!" (Alliance) or H [70] "Let the Fires Come!" (Horde) and A [70] Stop the Fires! or H [70] Stop the Fires! will complete.

Credit is granted for putting out flames for H [70] Fire Training or A [70] Fire Brigade Practice as long as you have picked it up before the Shade of the Horseman has spawned, so these can also be completed while attempting to douse the village fires.

When the fires are out the Shade of the Horseman then lands, and afterwards can be killed subsequently dropping a giant pumpkin nearby. The Shade of the Horseman is level 11 and easily dispatched - sort of. Typically he will be dead before you can even hit him, since so many high level characters are doing the quest. A Large Jack-o'-Lantern spawns on the ground when the Shade of the Horseman is killed.

The Large Jack-o'-Lantern can be clicked once a day for the [Scorched Holy Symbol] quest item that is handed into the Alliance Costumed Orphan Matron or Horde Masked Orphan Matron for the A [70] Smash the Pumpkin (Alliance daily) or H [70] Smash the Pumpkin (Horde daily) daily quest. She rewards you with a [Crudely Wrapped Gift] containing event goodies. You do not have to be present during the fire fighting efforts to loot the pumpkin. If you have several alts in a nearby inn, you can loot the quest item, switch alts, and loot again.

During the time the pumpkin is on the ground, the Alliance Costumed Orphan Matron or Horde Masked Orphan Matron will also give to high level players the quest N [65] The Headless Horseman which leads to the Headless Horseman Event in the Scarlet Monestary Graveyard. The quest can be shared and is worth doing as it allows an extra summoning of the Headless Horseman and leads to a followup quest which rewards xp or gold.

Notes

The flames appear to fall and grow down, so working top down is most effective. Also, catching the flaming embers early, before they have a chance to spread, appears to help.

The Shade of the Horseman cannot be attacked while he is in the air.
