Shadow

Shadows are some of the Lich King's most frightening creatures.^[1] Shadows are undead which are a direct result of the Scourge. They are a variation of undead previously unknown on Kalimdor.^{MoM 199} Some of these creatures appeared during the Scourge Invasion. These acolytes could be revealed using the necrotic runes they carried, and then destroyed with magic or strength of arms. When the shadows were destroyed, it was only a matter of time before the Lich King decided to recall his necropolises and leave the defenders in peace.^[2]

The complete Shadow Orb can sap strength from creatures its wielded against, turning them into shadows upon their death.^{M&M 158}

The “shadows” are the dark, malevolent forces seeking the world’s (or even the universe’s) dissolution; the “light” includes the virtuous, heroic forces preserving order and goodness. Their deeds and the powers they wield make up the stuff of legends… if not myths.^{S&L 9}

Shadow (aka Darkness) is also a corruption of the faith of the Light practiced by those of the Cult of the Damned^{MoM 132}, and the Cult of the Forgotten Shadow. For the Damned, their faith in the Light is perverted into an utter belief in Darkness, and they offer fanatic loyalty to their leaders and to their temple.^{MoM 132}

Magic School

“Shadow” is spell type common to many items and spells created by the Shadow Council and other such nefarious organizations.^{M&M 158} The arcane and shadow magic, appear to be tied together^{MM&M 73}. It appears to be split into subcategories or is synomous with "Darkness", "Negative", "Death", "Destruction", "Chaotic", "Evil", and "Fel" in the rpg. It is a damage type often found as a bonus type damage (enchantment or enhancement) in the RPG. In one example its also a subschool of the magic school of Illusion (illusions composed of a quasi-real, tangible shadow material with shadow bonuses, ex. Storm, Earth and Fire).^{M&M 100, 101, 157, 158} Spells of shadow may be derived their power from actual shadows & darkness.^{DF 32, 93}
